Sources: David Fizdale candidacy gaining steam for Grizzlies

Miami Heat assistant coach David Fizdale's candidacy ‎for the Memphis Grizzlies' coaching job is gaining steam, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com late Tuesday that Fizdale progressed to an interview with Grizzlies owner Robert Pera after having a strong first interview with Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace.

One source went so far as to say Tuesday night that Fizdale had moved into the lead in Memphis' fluid search, which initially targeted former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel. Sources say Vogel also met with Wallace and Pera before opting to take the Orlando Magic job.

ESPN.com reported last week that Fizdale had emerged as a co-finalist for the position along with San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego, who is also a candidate for the Houston Rockets' coaching vacancy.

Borrego met with Rockets officials for the first time Monday, and ESPN.com reported Tuesday that Borrego has advanced in the process to a face-to-face meeting this week with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander.

Veteran NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni and Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Stephen Silas are widely regarded as the leading candidates for the Rockets' job.

Memphis and Houston have the league's only current coaching vacancies.
