NEW YORK -- Jimmer Fredette is about to get another shot in the NBA.
Interim coach Kurt Rambis said Friday the New York Knicks are expected to sign the former NCAA player of the year to a 10-day contract Monday. Fredette has been playing for the Knicks' affiliate in the NBA Development League.
"He obviously can shoot the basketball, that's what he's known for. But we've got to see if he can actually handle the basketball and be able to create shots for himself and create shots for others," Rambis said before the Knicks' game at Brooklyn.
Fredette was waived by San Antonio in the preseason and was picked up by Westchester, where the sharpshooter is averaging 22.3 points and shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. He was MVP of the D-League All-Star Game last weekend in Toronto after setting a record with 35 points.
But the 6-foot-2 former BYU star has found little success in the NBA after being drafted 10th overall by Milwaukee in 2011, averaging just 6.0 points for three teams.
Rambis said the adjustment to the NBA can be slow for some players.
"Guys are much bigger, stronger, longer, quicker, faster, so it takes a certain kind of person that can play at this level," Rambis said. "And if you're missing one of those characteristics or attributes, it can be enough to keep you out of the league.
"Sometimes it takes players a few years to figure out how to adjust to the game at the NBA level and we'll see if he's made those adjustments."
The Knicks host Toronto on Monday night. Rambis said he wasn't sure when or how he would use Fredette, who would join a Knicks team that has Jose Calderon, Langston Galloway and rookie Jerian Grant as its point guards.
