DALLAS -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has given up his grudge against Jason Kidd, saying he hopes the former Mavs point guard succeeds as the Brooklyn Nets' head coach.
Kidd's departure from Dallas in the summer of 2012 left Cuban with hard feelings. Kidd had verbally committed to re-sign with Dallas, agreeing to a three-year, $9 million deal, only to change his mind and accept the same offer from the New York Knicks.
After one season with the Knicks, Kidd retired as a player, then went to Brooklyn as a head coach. He's under a lot of heat weeks into his coaching tenure, as the Nets entered Friday's road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 3-8 record despite having the NBA's highest payroll.
"I hope Jason does well," Cuban said, adding that it's premature to reach any conclusions about Kidd's coaching acumen. "I really do. I mean, we had a little falling out, but that's behind us. That was a one-year grudge. It's over."
Cuban also backed off his vow never to hang Kidd's No. 2 jersey from the American Airlines Center rafters, saying the leader of Dallas' 2011 championship team will be honored by the Mavs at some point. It's a matter of when and how, not if, the Mavs will honor Kidd.
"I just have to decide how to do it, because there's a lot of guys from those years' teams," Cuban said. "While J. Kidd is a Hall of Famer, he wasn't really a Hall of Famer who spent most of his career here. He had some great years here, but so did a lot of guys.
"It's not really a reflection on J. Kidd. It's more a reflection of how I want to deal with it. Do I want to do a Ring of Honor? Put a team in, a year and honor all the guys on the team? I don't know. I haven't decided yet."
Kidd had two stints in Dallas, playing for the Mavs for six full seasons and parts of two others. He was drafted by the Mavs with the second overall pick in 1994, prompting Cuban to buy season tickets.
Kidd was traded to the Phoenix Suns after two and a half seasons and returned to Dallas in a trade-deadline blockbuster in 2008, a trade that Cuban was heavily criticized for making until the Mavs won the 2011 title.
