How Nash trade gutted the Lakers

Yeah, it's a difficult time to be a Los Angeles Lakers fan right now.

The Lakers are looking at possibly the worst two seasons in the franchise's history since they moved to Los Angeles, a tough spot for the winningest franchise in NBA history. And while it's taken a perfect storm of bad breaks to get the Lakers here, some of those breaks came in the form of questionable commitments and front office decisions.

One of the moves that has broken decidedly badly and put the future in peril came in the form of a deal that was considered by some a "blockbuster" deal that would keep the Lakers' empire running: acquiring point guard Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade transaction with the Phoenix Suns.

The deal was symptomatic of the Lakers' heavy asset-depletion philosophy in the name of reloading. Instead, it led down a path of self-destruction and, in turn, proved to be a catalyst of the Suns' revival. Two years later, it's worth taking a look at the overall impact of the deal on both teams and what it will mean for each franchise going forward.
