CHICAGO -- The New York Yankees put shortstop Derek Jeter back on the disabled list Monday in the latest bump for the captain in an injury-filled season.
Jeter is out with a strained right calf. The return to the DL came on the same day teammate Alex Rodriguez was suspended through the 2014 season in a drug case.
The move came before the Yankees got routed by the Chicago White Sox 8-1.
"Who am I to argue?" Jeter said. "I plead my case all year and it hasn't worked out too well. I know I'm not going to play here for the next few days."
With Jeter going on the DL, the Yankees recalled infielder Dave Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. They also designated infielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment, and Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list. Outfielder Thomas Neal was claimed off waivers by the Cubs.
Rodriguez is appealing the penalty by Major League Baseball and is eligible to play while the case is being resolved.
The 39-year-old Jeter did not play Saturday or Sunday at San Diego. He appeared to take an awkward step while making a play in Friday night's 7-2 loss. He also had an awkward slide into third base.
A 13-time All-Star, Jeter is hitting .211 (4 for 19) with one home run and two RBIs.
He broke his left ankle in the AL championship series in October, and he went down again right after he made his much anticipated return.
After missing the first 91 games, he served as the designated hitter against Minnesota on July 11. Then, in his third at-bat, he strained his right quadriceps and wound up going back on the disabled list.
Jeter returned to the lineup last week and homered on the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay's Matt Moore. He also played shortstop for the first time this season in that game.
