Orioles activate Jonathan Schoop from 60-day disabled list

The Baltimore Orioles activated second baseman Jonathan Schoop from the 60-day disabled list to start Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

He hit a solo home run in his first at-bat Sunday and finished with two RBIs in the team's 9-1 victory.

The 23-year-old Schoop went on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee on April 1 and was then transferred to the 60-day DL on June 16.

In nine rehab games in the minors he hit .265 with two doubles, four home runs and seven RBIs.

"He's done everything possible,'' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He's probably in the best shape of his life.''

He was hitting .259 with three homers and nine RBIs in nine games (including eight starts at second base) for the Orioles before his injury.

The Orioles had optioned veteran utilityman Ryan Flaherty to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, which opened a roster spot for Schoop.
