POSSIBLY PUIG
Yasiel Puig could be back in Dodgers blue after missing more than a month with a left hamstring strain. Manager Don Mattingly says a final determination will be made on the star Cuban outfielder after he plays a second rehab game for High A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night.
FEELIN PHILLY
San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (6-2, 3.12) allowed one earned run in 15 innings over two starts against the Phillies last season. Severino Gonzalez (2-1, 6.88) starts for Philadelphia after his last turn was skipped.
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
The Nationals will call up right-hander Joe Ross from Double-A Harrisburg to make his major league debut against Cubs. Washington acquired the 6-foot-4 Ross in last winter's three-team deal with the Rays and Padres, and he's 2-2 with a 2.81 ERA in nine starts at Harrisburg.
BEHIND THE DISH
Catcher Jeff Mathis may see his first start in nearly two months, against Colorado. Mathis came off the disabled list Friday after being out with a broken right hand. Manager Dan Jennings said he planned on using Mathis to spell starting catcher J.T. Realmuto, and a day game after a night game seems like the perfect opportunity to get back behind the plate.
CASHNER'S WOES
San Diego's Andrew Cashner tries to get his season turned around. The right-hander leads the majors with eight losses despite a respectable 3.46 ERA. He faces the Reds in the second game of their series.
BUILDING BLOCK
John Danks looks to build on an unusual shutout as the White Sox continue their weekend series against the Tigers. The left-hander pitched Chicago's first complete game despite allowing 10 hits -- five for extra bases -- in a 6-0 win at Houston on Sunday. According to STATS, he is the only pitcher to give up at least 10 hits and at least five extra-base hits in a shutout going back to 1914. David Price starts for Detroit.
FEELING LEFT OUT
Jeff Locke needs a win to join the Pirates' recent hot streak. Entering Friday night's game at Atlanta, the Pirates had won 11 of 13. Locke, meanwhile, has lost three of his last four starts and will look for a turnaround in against the Braves. The left-hander is now 3-3 after winning his first two decisions this season.
