LEADING OFF: Lester vs Scherzer in high-priced matchup

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

---

ACES START

Top free agent prizes will be on the mound with Jon Lester and Max Scherzer starting as the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals wrap up a three-game set. Lester is 4-0 in five starts in May after going 0-2 in April for Chicago. Scherzer, the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner, has won four straight starts.

ELUSIVE WIN

Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick tries for his first win since opening day when he faces the Reds. Kendrick beat Milwaukee 10-0 on April 6 and hasn't won since, falling to 1-6. In eight starts since the opener, Kendrick has given up 39 earned runs in 46 1/3 innings. His six losses are the second-most in the NL.

THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT

Prized prospect Noah Syndergaard (1-2, 3.63 ERA) makes his fourth major league start for the New York Mets in the finale of a three-game series against Philadelphia. On the mound for the Phillies is Sean O'Sullivan (1-3, 3.54), who has never started against the Mets.

OLD FRIENDS

Princeton grad Chris Young, who turned 36 Monday, will take his 0.78 ERA, lowest among all pitchers with at least 30 innings, into his second start against the Yankees and Michael Pineda in less than two weeks. Young allowed a run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings against New York. Pineda yielded five runs in 5 1/3 innings at Kansas City.

OWNS THE ASTROS

Baltimore right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez will find out Wednesday whether these are the same old Houston Astros or the team that sits in first place in the AL West. Jimenez is 4-0 with a 2.24 ERA against Houston, with 53 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings.
