Red Sox 3B Pablo Sandoval out with bruised foot after HBP vs. Nationals

BOSTON -- Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Tuesday night's 8-7 win over the Washington Nationals in the top of the sixth inning with a bruised left foot after being hit by a pitch in the third.

After grounding out in his first at-bat, Sandoval took an 83 mph curveball from Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg on the left foot before jumping out of the batter's box in pain.

Manager John Farrell and a trainer came out to check on Sandoval, but he stayed in the game.

Farrell said Sandoval's foot got more tight and sore as the night went on.

"He got a scan here tonight and it shows no hairline or any issues structurally so we'll check him in the morning," Farrell said. "Whether or not he's available, we'll determine at that time."

Sandoval grounded out to second in the fifth before being lifted at the end of the inning.

With the Red Sox already without the services of shortstop Xander Bogaerts (knee), left fielder Hanley Ramirez, an infielder prior to this year, moved to third base to take over for Sandoval.

Right fielder Daniel Nava was shifted to left field and Shane Victorino, originally given the day off to rest, came in to play right.

In his first year with the Red Sox after signing a five-year, $95 million deal this offseason, Sandoval has hit .306 with three RBIs through the team's first eight games this season.
