Hyun-Jin Ryu's shoulder ailing

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu reported tightness in his left shoulder and will miss at least one spring training start, making it unlikely he will be ready for the start of the season, manager Don Mattingly said Friday.

Ryu received an anti-inflammatory injection Wednesday, the day after experiencing discomfort during a start against the Texas Rangers. He was on the disabled list last year from April 28 to May 21 with shoulder inflammation, and the Dodgers believe his latest setback will be similar in length.

"We kind of know what this is. We've dealt with it before and he's bounced back," Mattingly said. "Obviously, you're still going to be concerned and make sure you're cautious."

Ryu (28-15, 3.17 ERA in two seasons) was also on the DL last year for a strained gluteus muscle.

Ryu missed a few days earlier in this year's camp due to back spasms.

Because the Dodgers have open dates April 9, 16 and 20, they would need to find just one spot starter if Ryu returns by April 24. Despite a $260 million payroll, the Dodgers' have only non-roster pitchers such as Chad Gaudin and David Huff in the mix to start in Ryu's place, or minor leaguers Zach Lee and Mike Bolsinger.

The Dodgers' playoff hopes are built largely around their starting pitching, led by reigning National League MVP Clayton Kershaw, Ryu and Zack Greinke. The team is counting on the continued good health of newly acquired starters Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson, who have dealt with copious injuries in their careers. Injury setbacks have already hit relievers Kenley Jansen, who will be out until May because of foot surgery, and Brandon League, who has been delayed by shoulder soreness.
