PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison hit an RBI triple and scored on Jose Tabata's tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

Harrison had three hits in the Pirates' sixth win in eight games. Tabata, starting in right field for the injured Travis Snider, finished with two hits.

Pirates starter Edinson Volquez was working on a no-hitter before Devin Mesoraco's leadoff single in the seventh. He was charged with one run and three hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Reds right-hander Mike Leake allowed six hits in seven innings in his second consecutive scoreless outing. He pitched 6 2-3 innings in a 1-0 victory over Atlanta last Saturday in his previous start.

Tony Watson (10-1) got the win and Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

Reds right-hander Jonathan Broxton (4-2) allowed two runs and three hits in the eighth.

ORIOLES 9, TWINS 1

BALTIMORE -- Chris Davis hit his fourth career grand slam, and Baltimore got a dominating pitching performance from Miguel Gonzalez.

Delmon Young also homered for the AL East-leading Orioles, who built an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning against rookie Trevor May (0-4).

Baltimore's fourth win in five games was marred by an injury to first baseman Steve Pearce, who left with a right abdominal strain.

It was the fifth loss in six games for the Twins. Their lone bright spot was a home run by Trevor Plouffe, the 10,000th in franchise history.

Gonzalez (7-7) allowed one runs and four hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.

TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO -- Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings, and the contending Tigers won for the fifth time in six games.

Verlander (12-11) matched his season high with eight strikeouts. He allowed one run and nine hits while improving to 14-4 with a 2.94 ERA in his last 19 starts against Chicago.

The White Sox have lost nine of 10.

J.D. Martinez had a double and two singles for Detroit. The Tigers got 13 hits, including five doubles.

Scott Carroll (5-9) took the loss but didn't get much support in the field. The White Sox made four errors, contributing to four unearned runs.

YANKEES 6, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO -- Jacoby Ellsbury and Chase Headley homered, leading the Yankees to the win.

Chris Capuano (2-3) pitched 6 1-3 innings in his first win in seven starts since joining New York. The veteran left-hander, who was acquired last month in a trade with Colorado, allowed three runs, two earned, and eight hits.

David Robertson got the final four outs for his 35th save in 38 chances.

Jose Bautista homered and Dioner Navarro had three hits, but the Blue Jays dropped to 7-17 in August. Mark Buehrle (11-9) allowed four runs and seven hits in six-plus innings, leaving the lefty with a 1-13 record and a 6.14 ERA in 20 career starts against New York.

CUBS 7, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS -- Jorge Soler hit two homers for the Cubs, and fellow rookie Javier Baez had a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning off All-Star reliever Pat Neshek.

The Cardinals lost in the return of Yadier Molina. The All-Star catcher, who had been sidelined by a torn ligament in his right thumb, and went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

The crowd at Busch Stadium gave Molina a standing ovation when he walked in from the bullpen after pregame warmups, and another cheer before he batted in the first inning.

Neshek (6-1) led NL relievers with an 0.81 ERA entering the game. It was 2-all when he came in to begin the eighth, and he gave up hits to the first three batters.

Neil Ramirez (2-1) allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh.

RED SOX 8, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rookie Mookie Betts hit his first career grand slam and Anthony Ranaudo pitched six effective innings, leading Boston to the road win.

After Yoenis Cespedes drove in his second run of the game with a double, Betts connected off Chris Archer (8-7) to cap a five-run second inning that made it 8-0.

Ranaudo (3-0), recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game, gave up three runs and five hits. He has won all three of his big league starts.

Archer allowed eight runs and nine hits over four innings. The Rays have lost nine of 13.

RANGERS 13, ASTROS 6

HOUSTON -- Michael Choice and Rougned Odor each hit a three-run homer, powering Texas to the win.

The Rangers were up by two in the fourth inning when Choice launched his ninth home run into the Crawford Boxes in left field. Odor connected in a five-run seventh inning with a shot to the seats in right field.

Adam Rosales and Elvis Andrus added two RBIs apiece for the Rangers, who have the worst record in the American League. Scott Baker (3-3) pitched 6 1-3 innings for his second straight win.

Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer (4-10) yielded nine hits and a career-high seven runs in 4 1-3 innings.

METS 4, PHILLIES 1

NEW YORK -- Jacob deGrom pitched seven crisp innings and the Mets scored the tiebreaking runs when left fielder Grady Sizemore dropped an easy pop fly.

Eric Campbell stole home on a double steal, helping the Mets stay out of the NL East cellar with their 12th victory in 17 games against Philadelphia this year.

The Phillies had won four straight and six of seven. A victory in the series opener would have pushed last-place Philadelphia past New York, but Sizemore's two-out error with the bases loaded in the seventh cost them.

In a matchup of rookie right-handers, deGrom (7-6) allowed four hits and an unearned run. Jenrry Mejia struck out three in the ninth for his 20th save.

David Buchanan went six innings for the Phillies, giving up one run and four hits. Jake Diekman (3-4) got the loss.
