NEW YORK -- Brandon McCarthy earned his first win for the Yankees with an impressive debut in pinstripes, and Brett Gardner drove in three runs from the leadoff spot to send New York past the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Saturday.

Carlos Beltran homered, Kelly Johnson hit a two-run single to back McCarthy (1-0), who allowed one run and six hits, struck out nine and walked none over six innings. McCarthy, acquired from Arizona on July 6, was making his first home start for New York.

All-Star Alfredo Simon (12-4) gave up four runs -- two earned -- and five hits in five innings. He had been 6-0 with a 2.47 ERA in eight starts since a 6-3 loss at Dodger Stadium on May 27.

DETROIT -- Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking, bases-clearing double off Joe Nathan (4-3) with two outs in the ninth to complete a doubleheader sweep. Cleveland has won four straight to pull within 4 1-2 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Carlos Carrasco (3-3) pitched a perfect eighth and Cody Allen closed the game for his 13th save.

In the opener, Corey Kluber (10-6) came within an out of a complete game, striking out 10. He allowed seven hits, including three by Miguel Cabrera.

Drew VerHagen (0-1) allowed three runs and five hits over five innings in his major league debut.

BLUE JAYS 4, RANGERS 1

TORONTO -- Marcus Stroman (5-2) gave up four hits in seven shutout innings to snap a three-start winless streak, and Dan Johnson had two RBIs.

Melky Cabrera had three hits as the Blue Jays won for the first time in four games. Aaron Loup got three outs for his third save.

Colby Lewis (6-7) gave up two runs and eight hits in five innings. Texas, which stopped an eight-game losing streak with Friday's 5-1 victory, has not strung together consecutive wins since beating Minnesota on June 27 and 28 and has the worst record in the major leagues at 39-58.

RED SOX 2, ROYALS 1

BOSTON -- Rubby De La Rosa (3-2) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, and the defending World Series champions won for the sixth time in seven games.

Mike Napoli hit a tiebreaking homer that cleared a billboard atop the Green Monster seats and completely left the park in the sixth.

Danny Duffy (5-10) allowed two runs -- one earned -and six hits in 6 2-3 innings, losing for the fifth time in six starts. Kansas City has lost eight of 11.

RAYS 5, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- David Price (10-7) gave up four hits in eight scoreless innings to win five straight starts for the first time in his major league career. He walked none and struck out nine to increase his major league-leading total to 173.

Jake McGee got two outs for his eighth save in nine chances, completing a five-hitter for the Rays, who have won four straight.

Phil Hughes (10-6) allowed five runs and 11 hits in seven innings, matching the most hits against a Twins starter this season.

WHITE SOX 4, ASTROS 3

CHICAGO -- Tyler Flowers had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth.

White Sox starter Hector Noesi (4-7) gave up three runs in six innings, and Zach Putnam earned his third save and second in two nights.

George Springer hit his 20th home run, a solo shot, and Jose Altuve had a two-run double for the Astros.

Dallas Keuchel (9-6) allowed four runs and 12 hits in five innings.

ORIOLES 8, ATHLETICS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Adam Jones matched his career high of five RBIs to back Wei-Yin Chen, and Baltimore beat Oakland.

Jones hit a three-run home run in the first and had a two-run single in the fourth. Baltimore's All-Star center fielder also walked and scored in the third.

Chen (10-3) allowed three runs over five innings with four strikeouts in an uneven outing while winning his third consecutive start. The left-hander improved to 4-0 in five career starts against the A's.

Brandon Moss hit his team-leading 22nd home run for Oakland.

Oakland starter Jason Hammel (0-2) gave up five runs in two-plus innings, his second rocky outing since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs along with All-Star pitcher Jeff Samardzija in a trade on July 5.

MARINERS 3, ANGELS 2, 12 Innings.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Logan Morrison hit a go-ahead RBI double during Seattle's two-run 12th inning, and the Mariners hung on to beat Los Angeles.

The AL West rivals played extra innings for the second straight night, less than 24 hours after the Angels won the series opener 3-2 in 16 innings.

Los Angeles remained 1½ games behind AL West-leading Oakland.

Joe Thatcher (0-1) gave up a leadoff double in the 12th to Kyle Seager before Morrison drove him in with a hit down the left field line. Pinch-hitter Justin Smoak drove in pinch-runner Willie Bloomquist with an infield hit.

Dominic Leone (3-2) pitched one-plus inning for the victory after taking the loss Friday. Leone was pulled after he gave up a leadoff homer to David Freese.

Charlie Furbush got three outs for his first save in four major league seasons.
