ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas Rangers late-innings reliever Alexi Ogando was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with right elbow inflammation.
Ogando told the club about it after his appearance in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles. He'll be seen by Dr. Keith Meister later Wednesday.
The injuries continue to pile up for the Rangers. Ogando marks the 18th time the club has used the disabled list this season, which leads the majors. Aaron Poreda has been recalled to take Ogando's spot on the roster.
Ogando, 30, faced four hitters on Tuesday and retired one of them. He gave up an infield single, hit No. 8 hitter Jonathan Schoop in the shoulder and then allowed a double to No. 9 hitter Caleb Joseph on an 0-2 pitch. Joseph was batting .069 going into the game. Ogando's struggles helped turn a 2-2 game into a blowout fairly quickly.
Ogando, who was used a lot in the first six weeks of the season, is 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA in 27 games (25 innings) in relief this season. He is 10th in the American League in appearances. He was slated to be in the rotation before spring training began but couldn't find consistent enough command to claim a job and was shifted back to the bullpen.
Poreda will be making his second stint with the club. He was 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the Rangers earlier this season.
