Jose Reyes was designated for assignment last week by the Colorado Rockies and likely will become a free agent on Saturday. So is any team interested in bringing him aboard?

It appears the answer is yes, even if it's just middling interest.

Only two teams that we know of, the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals, are considering him at this point, while a few others that have needs could jump into the mix before he makes his decision.

Why so little interest?

Well, obviously Reyes has some baggage: He just served a 51-game suspension for an alleged domestic-abuse incident. This is a difficult PR issue that many clubs, owners and front offices don't want to deal with. But there's a major on-the-field concern as well: Most teams feel he has declined so much defensively at shortstop that he will need to make a position change to second base or third base or maybe become a utility player.

But Reyes is not without big league value. He still runs well enough to steal 25 bases and can still be a top-of-the-lineup table setter, and a few teams have noted they like his ability to help manufacture runs. He would also come cheap, as once the Rockies officially release him, they will be responsible for the entire balance of his contract. However, if someone signs him, that club will be responsible for the rate of the major league minimum (which will come off the Rockies' exposure). This makes signing Reyes a low-risk, high-reward type of move for teams. If it doesn't work out, they can just release him with little financial exposure.

As for Reyes himself, he knows he has a lot to prove. He has been humbled and humiliated, and by all accounts, he's hungry and wants to show he can still contribute at the major league level. I think he can, as well, particularly offensively, in the right scenario.

So let's look at the two teams that have expressed interest, three teams that might and a wild card that could factor into the negotiations.
