Alex Rodriguez to Yankees teammates: We should score five runs per day

BALTIMORE -- While the New York Yankees on most nights can barely score two runs per game, Alex Rodriguez told his teammates they should be putting up five runs every single day.

"I talked to the team yesterday, and there's no reason why we can't score five runs per night," he said of the meeting that occurred Tuesday night, prior to the Yankees' sixth loss in a row, in which they scored just one run and A-Rod hurt his hamstring. "That should be a good par for us, especially in our stadium with our offense."

The gravity of the meeting was downplayed by manager Joe Girardi, and by fellow leaders Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann. Beltran said the conversation occurred at the regular pre-series hitters meeting, where the batters go over the opposing pitchers.

A-Rod and Girardi were the only ones to speak, according to Beltran. Beltran said it wasn't a big deal.

"It was positive," Beltran said. "We have to focus on the positive. It is good to get together and lay down information that could make us better. The people on the bench see the game differently than the guys that are playing every day. From the bench, you can see something that we are not doing."
