Mark Teixeira will amp up his rehabilitation from a calf injury by going to the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa on Monday. He plans to eventually play in an instructional league game.

Teixeira said he has no target date for a return, but GM Brian Cashman has mentioned the end of next week in Toronto.

"I don't want to put any timetable on it," Teixeira said. "We did that last time and it put pressure on everybody to get back at a certain time. I want to take it day-by-day."

Teixeira first hurt the calf on Aug. 27. He didn't play again until Sept. 8. Since diving to try and beat a game-ending double play at first in Baltimore, Teixeira has been out. If the Yankees weren't in a pennant race, Teixeira said he wouldn't have pushed himself.

"That's why I came back early," Teixeira said. "Let's be honest, if we had a 10-game lead, I would have not have been back. Everyone knows that. We all knew that, but when you have an opportunity to help your team -- I thought at maybe not 100 percent, still being able to walk, to help the team -- I wanted to be out there. I was battling. I'm trying to come back as soon as I can."

Teixeira planned on hitting in the cages on Thursday and hoped to do some work on the fields by the end of the weekend.

"You just have to make sure that he is ready," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I think it has been 12 days so far. He is not really run. He has not done a whole lot. He hasn't done anything. Last time, he had been doing some things. He'll go Tampa and we'll see if we can get our player back."

Teixeira said the calf is still swollen and sore.

"Just by feeling it right now, you can tell that is swollen, tight and sore," Teixeira said. "So once that goes away and they can see that I'm running full speed, making cuts and being able to do everything I can on a baseball field, then I'll be able to come back."
