PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- David Wright will proceed directly to New York to have his sore ribs examined by Mets doctors and not stop at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Sandy Alderson said the Mets should have results of Wright's tests on Saturday, the day Wright is due to return to camp.

San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley reportedly already has been approached as Wright's replacement should Team USA advance to the final round with a victory over Puerto Rico tonight.

Alderson on Friday morning in Port St. Lucie did not want to address third base alternatives should Wright need to open the season on the DL. The GM indicated that those options would not even be discussed internally, in all likelihood, until after Wright was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

If the Mets did need a third-base sub, Zach Lutz and Justin Turner might be most equipped to handle the role. Brandon Hicks and Brian Bixler also remain in camp.
