ATLANTA -- In an exclusive interview with ESPNNewYork.com, David Wright indicated he is unsure what his future holds.

Here are additional comments ...

• Wright recently had described himself as “extremely optimistic” about his future with the Mets. Yet he cautioned not to infer from that comment that returning is a foregone conclusion.

David Wright is uncertain what his future holds.

“The optimism is I’m hopeful,” he said. “It’s well-documented: I’ve really enjoyed my time here. We’ve obviously gone through some tough seasons. I’m not lying. I’ve really enjoyed it. I have a lot of really close friends -- not just players or coaches or anything. Front office. Ownership. Stadium security. Clubhouse attendants. I have really a lot, a lot of close friends that I made in this organization. I enjoy it here. I enjoy New York. I feel like the fans and followers of the team really welcomed me with open arms. They’ve seen the ups and downs, obviously. And they’ve stuck right by me. And I’m appreciative.”

• Wright said he never has been assured by Fred or Jeff Wilpon that he will remain a Met for life.

“We never really talked about it,” Wright said. “There’s never really been a need to talk about it. It’s funny, you know? I talk to Jeff frequently. When we talk, it’s about nonsense. It’s usually just about golf or football or something like that. It’s never really been brought up. I think it’s been cool, because you can set aside the professional -- the boss-employee relationship -- and talk about other things.”

• Wright plans to discuss with his agents early this offseason a course of action.

“I’m not even sure if it’s a strategy,” Wright said. “More so, I just want to learn what to expect, when to expect it. I’ve obviously never been through something like this.”

He will lean on his family, too.

“My mom and my dad have always been a voice of reason,” Wright said. “There’s sometimes where, as much as I hate to say it, I’m in a position where I can’t evaluate the situation very well because I’m right in the middle of it. And even my brothers. I’d like to talk to my brothers about it, just to see what their take is and what they feel is best for me.”

• Wright wants his next contract to carry him until retirement. He is unsure if he wants to play until he’s 40 like Chipper Jones, though.

“I don’t know,” Wright said. “I’d like to play for as long as I feel like I can be successful and do the things I’m capable of doing. I guess you never really know until that time comes. I’d love to play for as long as my body will let me.”
