Yoenis Cespedes, Mets set franchise records in 12-run third, rout Giants

NEW YORK -- Yoenis Cespedes and the New York Mets each set franchise records in an explosive third inning Friday en route to a 13-1 victory against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field.

The Mets (14-7) won their seventh straight game.

The Mets produced 12 runs in the third -- a franchise record for a frame, surpassing an 11-run sixth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on July 16, 2006.

Cespedes, back in the starting lineup for the first time in a week after dealing with a bruised right leg, became the first Met to drive in six runs in an inning.

He delivered a two-run single against Jake Peavy and a grand slam against Mike Broadway. Butch Huskey previously held the franchise record with five RBIs in the sixth inning at the Marlins on May 26, 1998. Cespedes became the first major league player to produce six RBIs in an inning since the Angels’ Kendrys Morales on July 30, 2012, at Texas.

Peavy was knocked out after the first six batters reached base. Overall, eight consecutive batters reached to open the third before Steven Matz struck out on a failed two-strike bunt attempt.

Peavy was charged with six runs on four hits and five walks in 2-plus innings. It was his shortest outing since departing after 1⅔ innings on July 6, 2010, with a season-ending injury.

Peavy now has the highest ERA this season of any former Cy Young winner (minimum 20 IP). At 8.61, he took the lead from ex-Met R.A. Dickey (6.75).

In addition to Cespedes’ two-hit, six-RBI inning, Michael Conforto had an RBI double and an RBI single in the third. Curtis Granderson and David Wright also reached twice apiece in the frame.

Broadway entered the appearance with a 3.86 ERA. His ERA soared to 18.90 by the completion of the inning. He and Peavy combined to throw 66 pitches in the third, when the Mets had eight hits and four walks and sent 15 batters to the plate.

What a rebound: Matz< tossed six scoreless innings while logging a career-high-matching 110 pitches. Since recording only five outs in his season debut, Matz now has a 0.93 ERA in three starts -- all victories.

San Francisco finally got on the board in the seventh on ex-Met Angel Pagan’s solo homer against Jerry Blevins.

What’s next: Jacob deGrom (2-0, 1.54 ERA) opposes right-hander Matt Cain (0-2, 6.43) on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
