GREENBURGH, N.Y. –- Steve Kerr is still close with Phil Jackson and he wants to become a head coach in the NBA.

So naturally, there are rumors of him potentially coaching the Knicks if Jackson opts to make a head coaching change with Mike Woodson after this season.

“It’s crazy,” Kerr said on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on ESPN New York 98.7 FM. “I think people are just connecting the dots because of my relationship with Phil Jackson. That’s all it is, just speculation.”

Kerr, a television analyst, said he has stayed in touch with Jackson over the years since playing for the Zen Master while with the Chicago Bulls. The two occasionally have lunch in Southern California if Kerr is working a game in the Los Angeles area.

The former Suns general manager said he would like to follow in Jackson’s footsteps someday as a head coach in the NBA.

“I’ve actually said that publicly which is another reason why this stuff sort of started making the rounds last week,” Kerr said. “When I left Phoenix after being the GM there for three years, I realized I didn’t want to get back in management.

“There’s a lot of that job that didn’t appeal to me. What did appeal to me was being on the floor with the players which you hardly ever get to do as the GM.”

Cowherd asked Kerr what he would do if Jackson hypothetically offered him the Knicks job tomorrow.

“I have no idea,” Kerr said. “There’s a lot that goes into that. I don’t know, we’ll see.”
