NEW YORK -- They sure look like they're for real, don't they? The Brooklyn Nets, playing with heart and passion, extended their season-high winning streak to five with a heart-stopping 104-95 double-overtime victory over the two-time defending champion Miami Heat at Barclays Center.

The Nets scored the first 11 points in the second OT and never looked back.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Nets (15-21) have beaten the defending champion twice in one season for the first time since 2002-03 (Los Angeles Lakers). They also defeated the Heat (27-10) in Brooklyn's home opener. The Nets are 5-0 since 2014 began (and coach Jason Kidd got rid of his ties). Oklahoma City, Cleveland, Atlanta, Golden State and, now, Miami. Not too shabby.

Joe Johnson had a team-high 32 points in 45 minutes -- just six after halftime. It was Johnson's season-high third straight 20-plus-point game in a row. Paul Pierce added 23 points in 44 minutes. He missed shots that could've won the game for the Nets at both the end of regulation and the first overtime. But he connected on a huge 3-pointer that put Brooklyn up 100-93 in the second OT.

LeBron James was dominant, scoring 13 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter. But James fouled out for the first time since 2008 with 36 seconds left as he drove to the basket with the Heat down 93-91. Shaun Livingston, who had an incredible performance, took the charge. Livingston finished with 19 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks in a career-high 51 minutes. Kevin Garnett had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a season-high 51 minutes.

Norris Cole drained a jumper with 3.3 seconds left to send the game to double overtime.

The Nets won with their defense once again, limiting the Heat to just six points after regulation. Miami, playing the second half of a back-to-back, shot just 42.5 percent from the field.

LOSING THE LEAD: The Nets took a 76-64 lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold it. Kidd elected to have Andray Blatche, Andrei Kirilenko, Mirza Teletovic, Jason Terry and Livingston start the quarter and it backfired. The Nets went 5-for-19 in the period and were outscored 25-13.

TENSIONS ESCALATE: With 8:37 left in the fourth quarter, James charged at Teletovic.

James was upset that Teletovic bare-hugged him in transition after James committed an offensive foul. As James came at Teletovic, Teletovic just smirked. Teletovic was assessed a flagrant 1 foul.

JOE GOES OFF: Johnson had 22 points in the first quarter. He hit his first eight shots and finished 9-for-10 in the opening period. It was actually his second-highest scoring quarter this season. Johnson had 29 in the third against the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 16. James had 16 in the first quarter.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Nets gave up 32 points in the first quarter -- and 32 in the next two quarters: 13 in the second and 19 in the third. It's the fewest points the Nets have surrendered in the second and third quarters combined this season.

INJURIES, INJURIES, INJURIES: The Nets were without Deron Williams (ankles) and Brook Lopez (season-ending broken foot). The Heat were without Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and Shane Battier.

STARS COME OUT: Mariano Rivera, Joe Girardi, Anthony Mason, Spike Lee, Rihanna and Phillip Phillips were all at the game.

NICKNAME GAME: Players from both teams wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back.

UP NEXT: The Nets travel to Toronto to face the Raptors Saturday night at Air Canada Centre.
