NBA Rumor Central: Pelicans roster set for next season?

Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports

On Wednesday, The Times-Picayune confirmed there was an agreement between the New Orleans Pelicans and small forward Alonzo Gee, while ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported rookie Cheick Diallo will sign a three-year contract. Gee declined his 2016-17 player option in late June to test the free-agent market. But with no acceptable offers coming his way, he decided to re-sign with the Pelicans via a one-year, minimum contract.

Those deals -- along with the agreements with free agents Langston Galloway (Knicks), Solomon Hill (Pacers), Terrence Jones (Rockets), E'Twaun Moore (Chicago) and Tim Frazier (re-signed) as well as rookie Buddy Hield (the No. 6 pick in the 2016 NBA draft) -- should all be signed soon. Once all the contracts are signed, New Orleans will have 15 players under contract for 2016-17 and that is the group likely to start next season.

NBA teams can carry up to 20 players on the roster in the offseason, so the Pelicans might bring in more players, however they will probably get no guaranteed money or just a little to attend training camp as they will be long shots to make the opening night roster.

When training camp opens, the starting five may look like this: Jrue Holiday, Galloway, Anthony Davis, Dante Cunningham and Omer Asik. Tyreke Evans will begin the season on the inactive list as he recovers from arthroscopic surgery he had in May to remove loose particles from his right knee.
