NBA Rumor Central: Bradley Beal seeks max deal

Washington Wizards starting shooting guard Bradley Beal will enter the market starting July 1 as a restricted free agent. He is seeking a max contract.

“I want to be valued the right way,” Beal told The Washington Post's Jorge Castillo. “I feel like I’m a max player and that’s what I’m looking for. If Washington can’t meet that requirement then I may be thinking elsewhere. I’m pretty sure that they probably won’t [let me go]. At the end of the day, that’s where I want to be. I think a deal will probably get done but you just never know.”

Early estimates for players with zero to six years of NBA experience have the 2016-17 max salary coming in at about $21.6 million. A max five-year contract from the Wizards would pay Beal roughly $124.2 million, while a four-year offer sheet from another team will come in at $92.2 million.

There are risks to paying Beal that much money as he has been injury-prone during his four years in the NBA. In that time, he has only played in 247 out of a possible 328 regular-season games and this season he was only available for 55 games. When asked, Beal downplayed all the missed games due to injuries.

“I hear about it all time, but that doesn’t define me as a player,” Beal said. “That won’t stop me from growing as a player and it won’t stop me from being who I am. The injury thing, that’s behind me. I’m moving forward. I’m past it."

The Wizards are hoping Beal is right as they will likely match his asking price.

Beal averaged 17.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists this season.
