Draft preview: On shaky ground, Blazers could grab Louisville's Harrell

Count the Portland Trail Blazers among the teams that might strongly petition the NBA to reverse its offseason schedule and hold free agency before the draft.

Especially this offseason.

The Blazers are in that precarious position of not really knowing what they’ll need on the roster until they know who they’ll have left after the July start of free agency. Franchise anchor LaMarcus Aldridge will be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market, and he seems inclined to test the waters and listen to what suitors will offer – particularly those teams in his native Texas.

An Aldridge departure would leave a gaping hole at the power forward position for the Blazers, who might be inclined to seek a big with the No. 23 overall pick. In a perfect world, NCAA player of the year Frank Kaminsky from Wisconsin or Arkansas’ Bobby Portis would tumble out of the teens and into reach in the early 20s on the draft board. But short of that happening, ESPN insider Chad Ford has Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell slotted in Portland’s spot in his latest mock draftInsider.

Harrell’s relentless energy, athleticism and explosiveness around the rim has drawn comparisons to Denver’s Kenneth Faried. And his 15.7 points and 9.2 rebounds a game last season brings another dose of fresh legs to a frontcourt that could use an infusion of youth. The good thing for Portland is that C.J. McCollum and Meyers Leonard showed breakout ability in the playoffs and give the team flexibility in case Aldridge bolts or shooting guard Wes Matthews is slow to recover from his major Achilles surgery.
