MLB Rumor Central: Assessing Jose Reyes' market

Barring an unforeseen move by a team to trade for him, recently-DFA'd Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes will become a free agent on Saturday. So who will be interested in him?

Rumor Central

ESPN's Jim Bowden offers a look at Reyes' market (Insider required), noting that the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets are two teams that are at least considering him at this point in time. He also opines that the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox might express some interest.

That said, how does Reyes fit with each of those teams?

For the Mets, the connection is obvious. New York needs all the help it can get on offense, especially considering David Wright's absence for the foreseeable future. And for his part, Reyes "desperately longs" for a reunion with his former team, Mike Puma and Howie Kussoy of the New York Post report.

Complicating matters for the two sides is the presence of Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel on the free-agent market. New York plans to work out the 32-year-old, GM Sandy Alderson told reporters, including ESPN.com's Adam Rubin.

If signed, Reyes could fill in at the hot corner for the Mets. However, "some evaluators expressed a lot of doubt about whether Reyes could play third base ... given his inexperience at the position and his unusual throwing motion," ESPN's Buster Olney writes in his Wednesday MLB roundup (Insider required).

"I'm not sure he can play second base, let alone third," a scout tells Olney.

Speaking of second base, that's likely where the Royals would look to use Reyes if they signed him, Bowden writes. Kansas City requested release waivers on Omar Infante on Tuesday, which means he'll become a free agent Thursday if he goes unclaimed, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports. Since parting ways with Infante, the team has used Whit Merrifield at second base. Signing Reyes could mean Merrifield plays more at third base, which is open as a result of Mike Moustakas' season-ending ACL injury.

For what it's worth, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com tweeted that rumors of the Royals' interest in Reyes were "simply not true" shortly after they first surfaced.

As for the Angels and White Sox, their connection to Reyes is derived by their needs. Los Angeles could use some help in the infield, while Chicago is likely looking at all options in order to get back to having a shot at winning the AL Central.

Bowden also listed the Oakland Athletics as a potential match for Reyes but hears there's "no chance" they'll sign him right now.
