Rangers designate Baker for assignment

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Rangers designated infielder Jeff Baker for assignment Wednesday, clearing the way for right-handed pitcher Matt West to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

West, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, had to be activated from the 60-day disabled list in order to play for the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League.

Baker is a free agent, so the move is procedural. He batted .279 with 11 home runs and 21 RBIs for 74 games this season.

West joins pitchers Ryan Harvey, Will Lamb and Nick McBride, catcher Jorge Alfaro and infielders Brett Nicholas and Ryan Rua in the Arizona Fall League, which opened its season Tuesday.

West spent most of the season on the DL for High-A Myrtle Beach. He had surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 22, 2012.
