Ellis returns to practice, could play vs. OKC

DALLAS – It appears likely that Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Monta Ellis will miss only one game due to his right calf injury.

Ellis was “full bore” in practice Tuesday, coach Rick Carlisle said, and there’s a strong possibility that the Mavs’ leading scorer could play in Wednesday night’s road game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“He’s making a lot of progress,” Carlisle said. “I think he’s going to be upgraded to at least questionable for tomorrow with a chance that he’s going to play.

“Thankfully, Monta’s thing was not serious. It was painful and he’s worked through it to this point. Nothing’s for sure tomorrow, but it looks promising.”

Reserve guard J.J. Barea also practice Tuesday and hopes to be available against the Thunder.

Ellis had a streak of 237 consecutive games played snapped during Sunday’s loss to the Indiana Pacers. Ellis was injured during Friday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs when he was inadvertently kneed in the calf while defending Manu Ginobili and was on crutches Saturday.

Ellis, who had never before missed a game during his two-year tenure with the Mavs, has a history of playing through injuries. That included playing despite a painful left hip strain suffered two games before the All-Star break that was a factor in Ellis’ extended slump.

Carlisle had said that the Mavs needed Ellis to be “reasonable” during his recovery from this injury, emphasizing the importance of Dallas’ go-to guy being healthy for the playoffs. Carlisle stressed Tuesday that Ellis’ health remains the priority, not rushing him back into the Mavs’ lineup, although he fully expects Ellis to push to play in Oklahoma City.

“He’s not going to play unless he’s 100 percent,” Carlisle said. “There’s a chance he’s not going to play, but he did real well today. If he’s feeling good and you want to try to talk him out of playing, you’re welcome to it.”
