Jake Arrieta, Kris Bryant honored for August

CHICAGO -- The Cubs' Jake Arrieta was named pitcher of the month for August in the National League while third baseman Kris Bryant was named rookie of the month.

Arrieta was 6-0 with a 0.43 ERA, becoming the first pitcher since Jim Kaat in 1974 to win six of six starts with an ERA below 0.75 in one calendar month, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Arrieta capped off his award-winning month with his first career no-hitter on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's 17-6 with a 2.11 ERA overall.

Bryant hit a two-run home run to help Arrieta to his win on Sunday, finishing off a month in which he hit .330 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. Bryant led all rookies in on-base percentage (.422) and slugging (.620). He has 22 home runs and 84 RBIs and is the current favorite for Rookie of the Year while Arrieta should be in the mix for the NL Cy Young award.

Arrieta and Bryant will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate their performances.
