MLB roundup: As trade focus shifts to Andrew Miller, Nats figure to remain involved

The Washington Nationals were deep into talks with the Yankees for lefty reliever Aroldis Chapman, along with the Cubs and the Indians. So it figures the Nats will pick up the threads of those talks -- knowing which of their prospects are valued by the Yankees -- and engage in the conversations for Andrew Miller.

The Yankees will take offers for Miller, and given the enormous return they got for Chapman, the price will be extraordinary, because Miller is under contract for 2017 and 2018; he's not just a rental. You could also argue that Miller is the better reliever, with a lot of postseason success (one hit allowed in 8 1/3 innings).

But Miller could also be a good target for the Nationals because of his pliability. Jonathan Papelbon is the Washington closer and has always made it clear he wants to remain a closer, and he continues to be good at his job (if not great); he has allowed 32 hits and 10 walks in 32 1/3 innings this year, with 19 saves.

Miller has said and demonstrated repeatedly that he'll pitch anytime his manager wants him to pitch.
