23.4 gone! Kamran holds the edge! Aamer landed one just short of a length, the ball swung away and bounced more than Strauss expected, taking a thick top edge as he shaped to cut. Kamran didn't look totally comfortable in taking the catch, but - vitally - he held on and Pakistan break through before lunch! 93/2
8.4 this time Pakistan make no mistake! Aamer gets his wicket as Cook is square up by a good ball on off stump, a thick edge is snapped up by Imran Farhat at first slip 42/1
33.1 Aamer strikes again! Trott pads up to a ball angled across him and after a good hard think, Tony Hill gives him lbw. Trott asks for a review, though he doesn't look entirely convinced, and HawkEye shows it pitching in line and clipping the top off of stump, so the decision stands 118/4
32.3 gone! No review needed this time. Asif has been hammering away on that good length just outside off stump and this one kept straight, finding the inside edge from Pietersen and the ball crashed into the top of middle stump 116/3
95.5 Collingwood is struck on the pad! Big appeal, Tony Hill thinks long and hard and gives Collingwood out! But was there an inside edge there? Collingwood consults Morgan, and they're going to review this. Yep, hits pad first and then bat, and would have gone on to hit the top of middle. Good umpiring from Hill, and Pakistan have finally broken through! 337/5
99.4 big appeal as Morgan is rapped on the back pad, and Tony Hill raises the finger! And replays suggest that is another good decision, Hill's having a good game. Morgan walks off to warm applause from the large crowd, it's been a fantastic knock from him. Hopefully there's some applause for Asif too, who has bowled very intelligently this morning 344/6
102.4 terrible mix-up, and Prior is run out! Swann had aimed a push to cover off another full ball but the ball squirted through midwicket. They were looking for a third run, Prior watching the ball rather than the non-striker. Swann froze at the other end, and by the time he sent Prior back it was too late! 351/7
103.2 that's as out as they come, a straight ball hits Swann on the knee roll, the bat was nowhere near it and Tony Hill has no hesitation raising the finger. Absolutely no need for HawkEye to tell us that was hitting middle stump 354/8
104.1 finished! Umar Gul gets in on the action with a good straight ball that Broad plays all around - it crashes into middle and leg 354/10
103.3 gone! Asif is on a hat-trick, and he's got five! The left-hander Anderson pads up and offers no shot to a ball that has surprised him by swinging in and again that is a very simple decision for umpire Hill 354/9

16.4 cracker! Lovely delivery to end Farhat's stay! Round the wicket, angling in full towards the left hander before snaking away late, Farhat was aiming to mid on and the ball bent past his outside edge and crashed into off stump, dreamy stuff from the birthday boy 32/2
4.4 and there's the first breakthrough! Anderson makes Butt play with a good-length delivery that moves away from him instead of straightening, and there's a thin edge through to the wicketkeeper 5/1
20.1 gone! Anderson has his third and Pakistan are folding! It was full and swinging away, Ali popped forward to defend but feathered a nick through to Prior. England were not all that confident with their appeal but Ali chose, eventually, not to refer the decision... oh dear.. replays show it came off the pocket. Why didn't Ali refer!? Perhaps it's tricky for the young man to take a team decision like that... 41/4
17.6 Finn strikes! Pakistan in trouble now! This is just the right length from Finn, not too full, hitting the pitch and leaving the left hander a touch, Amin was stuck in his crease and got squared up, it came off the outside edge and flew to Swann at second slip 35/3
21.5 Umar falls now and Pakistan are in disarray. Back of a length, nipping away a fraction and Umar was rooted to the crease, prodding at it with no conviction and only succeeded in outside edging through to Swann at second slip 45/5
40.2 Anderson strikes, just! It was a regulation nick, just leaving the right hander off the pitch, Shoaib edged it straight towards Strauss at first slip who fluffed the first attempt but held his nerve and, more importantly, the rebound. Shoaib's vigil ends and Anderson has his fourth 105/7
23.1 Finn gets another! Kamran Akmal prods limply, tentatively outside off and simply guides a catch to Collingwood at second slip 47/6
42.3 gone now and Anderson has five! Happy Birthday Jimmy Anderson! Full and swinging away outside off stump, for once Aamer has a bit of a drive at it and can only outside edge to Swann at second slip 108/8

49.5 success for Broad, finally! Kaneria probably did think he was Salim Malik. It was full and he aimed an expansive drive, in the end getting none of it, and it crashes into the stumps 147/9
53.6 oh no! What a shame for Pakistan! Gul pushes to cover, desperately searching the single to take the strike, Asif had already set off, but Eoin Morgan picked up, turned, steadied himself and threw the stumps down. Top work from Morgan and it's brought an end to an entertaining partnership 182/10

0.4 well, well, well! Chaos! It took almost the entire slip cordon to take that! Great delivery from Aamer, leaving Strauss off the pitch, it went to second slip, routine catch, but the fielder could not hold on at first attempt, then parried the second attempt over first slip, only for none other than Kamran Akmal to slide in and take a superb reaction catch! Only Pakistan could do that! 2/1
7.1 and Asif gets his 100th Test wicket! It's not a very good delivery, swinging down leg side, but Alastair Cook can only feather a catch to Kamran Akmal, who takes his second of the morning 18/2

24.2 gone! Gul strikes, what a day he's having! Trott's stumps are splattered as this one keeps a touch low and burrows under his bat before he can stab a defence down in time. Pakistan on a role now 66/4
22.3 what a catch! Kamran Akmal take a bow! Pietersen falls thanks to an absolute stunner from Kamran! It was on a length and came back a fraction from outside off stump, Pietersen got a sizeable inside edge that flew behind him, Kamran dived a long way to his left to clasp the chance one-handed! 65/3
28.4 massive appeal, has Gul struck!? Yes! Collingwood gone. It was short and kept a little low, Collingwood tried to pull but it crept under the bat and struck him just in front, umpire Tony Hill took an age to give him out but eventually the finger came up. Collingwood thought about referring but decided against it, good call too, as replays showed it just clipping off stump 72/5
37.6 oh no! Morgan and Prior have had a horrible mix-up here and Morgan is gone! Prior drove through point and there was a comfortable two, but the batsmen then started off for a third, only for Prior to send Morgan back, and the relay throw had Morgan short at the bowler's end 98/6

48.1 he might have another one here, looks very close, fullish and Swann tried to work it to the leg side and struck him in front. Big appeal from Kaneria, Tony Hill decides against it and we have a referral... Looks straight, can't detect an inside edge, this should be out... and is! Finally some reward for Kaneria! 147/7
59.1 and there's a wicket, Broad drives at a good offspinner outside off, Malik tempted the batsman by tossing the ball up and a thick edge was easily clasped at first slip by Farhat 203/8
61.6 Shoaib Malik gets another one, Anderson looked a likely candidate for the offspinner. Tossed up, Anderson sweeps against the spin and gets a top edge that lobs up towards leg for a simple catch for Kamran Akmal 213/9

14.4 Anderson strikes! Farhat battled hard all morning but this time he pushed fatally outside off stump, it was the inswinger, perhaps that's what drew Farhat into playing, but he could only get a thick edge that flew to Andrew Strauss at first slip who made no mistake 31/4
3.1 oh dear, poor shot from Butt and he's been very smartly taken by Collingwood at third slip! Short from Broad but not quite wide enough for Butt to cut, he ended up top edging and it flew quickly to Collingwood who made absolutely no mistake. 10/1
3.3 gone, Broad has two and Pakistan are in real trouble! It was full, straight and burst through Ali's defences to trap him on the pad bang in front of the stumps. Tony Hill had no hesitation... Ali asks for the referral and it shows it just clipping the top of leg stump so the decision stands! 10/2
4.1 Another one gone! Full and swinging into the left hander, Amin played around his front pad and missed it entirely. It struck him in front of leg stump and was given out. Amin thought long about referring but rightly opted not to. England on fire here! 11/3
17.4 gone this time! Aamer's vigil ends. Finn went much fuller, inviting a drive and this time Aamer couldn't resist. In the end it flew off a thickish outside edge low to Pietersen in the gully who took the chance easily 41/6
16.6 ooh! Umar looks in trouble here! Hooping inswinger that came back very late and crashed into the pads as he tried to get forward to defend, it looked in front and he was given out but chose to refer, replays confirm the bad news for him though and he as to go. Pakistan are in all kinds of trouble now. Horrid scorecard 37/5
26.4 Anderson has 10 for the match! And what a great delivery to bring up that milestone! It's angled in, fullish length and swinging away late - the perfect ball - and Malik tries to turn the ball through leg, only to get a leading edge to Collingwood at third slip 65/9
19.1 Kamran has gone! He bags a pair. What a miserable Test he's had. It was shortish but didn't bounce at all, Kamran aimed to swing away a pull shot but it burrowed under the bat and struck him close to leg stump. Tony Hill gave him out, Kamran wasn't happy but his brother used up the last referral so he had no choice but to go. 41/7
20.5 another one goes! And that's a super sharp catch from Collingwood at third slip, Gul drove hard at a fullish outswinger and a thick edge flew hard and high through the cordon, Collingwood snatched the chance above his head 50/8

Match Notes

  • England aim for swing in Australia

England's fast bowlers will start practising with the Kookaburra balls that will be used during the Ashes as soon as the Test campaign with Pakistan is over

  • Butt keeps faith in Kamran Akmal

Kamran Akmal dropped a sitter, missed out on a stumping and another crucial catch of Eoin Morgan which landed only a few inches from his gloves in England's first innings

  • Butt not convinced Ys heads are the answer

Salman Butt is not convinced that returning Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan to the Test team would be the right move

  • Strauss plays down Pietersen's poor form

Kevin Pietersen's ongoing struggle for form remains England's single biggest concern following a thumping 354-run victory over Pakistan at Trent Bridge

  • Strauss urges consistency after England triumph

In the end, resistance was brief and futile. With James Anderson unplayable and England's slip cordon on fire, Pakistan shed seven wickets in the morning session to crumble to a miserable 80 all out
