O's exec: We won't conduct manager interviews until at least July 31

BALTIMORE -- Dave Trembley will get at least another month
to prove he's the right man to manage the Baltimore Orioles.

Andy MacPhail, who took over as president of baseball operations
last week, said Wednesday that he won't resume interviewing
candidates for the managerial job "until at least the trading
deadline," which is July 31.

Trembley was made the interim manager on June 18 after the
Orioles fired Sam Perlozzo. Before the end of the week the
manager's job was offered to Joe Girardi, who turned it down.

"We tried our pre-emptive strike with Girardi. It didn't work.
What I would like to do now is ... let's watch Dave manage for a
while," MacPhail said.

The Orioles were 4-3 under Trembley entering Wednesday night's
game against the New York Yankees. With MacPhail watching the team
in person for the first time, Baltimore beat the Yankees 3-2
Tuesday night.

"I was very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm the team
played with yesterday. I liked the idea we were aggressive on the
basepaths, we tried to make things happen," MacPhail said. "We
shared the load in the bullpen. So I was pleased."

MacPhail wants to get to know the team before he begins looking
for a manager. He might even end up sticking with Trembley, a minor
league manager for two decades before joining the Orioles as
bullpen coach this season.

"Before we take this team in a direction, and you try to
customize a manager for it, it's incumbent upon me to try to
collect as much information as I can to help us make the decision
which way we're going," MacPhail said.

"I'll do my due diligence, but I won't be doing interviews here
until I would imagine at least the trading deadline. There is no
search that's going to take place for a while," he said "We're
going to let Dave manage and see how things go. There's no race
here. Let's get the right guy. That's what the object is."

Possible candidates include Dusty Baker, Don Baylor, Rick
Dempsey and quite possibly Davey Johnson, the last manager to lead
the Orioles into the playoffs (in 1996-97).

"I've been in the game 30 years. I've got agents representing
clients, I've got friends of friends, I've got a guy that coached
for somebody. Compiling the list is not something that's
difficult," MacPhail said. "I just think you can do a more
comprehensive job if you give it more time."
