Rangers OF Matthews named AL Player of the Week

NEW YORK - Texas Rangers outfielder Gary Matthews Jr.
on Monday was named the American League Player of the Week.

A first-time All-Star this season, Matthews batted .522
(12-for-23) with a .957 slugging percentage, two home runs, two
doubles, a triple and seven RBIs in six games.

At Detroit's Comerica Park on Wednesday, he became the third
Texas player in history to hit for the cycle. He also became
the 14th player to hit for the cycle in "natural order" -
single, double, triple and home run.

The third Ranger to receive the award this season, Matthews is
batting .314 with 18 home runs and 77 RBIs - all career highs.

Others considered for the award were Esteban German and Ryan
Shealy of the Kansas City Royals and Robinson Cano of the New
York Yankees.
