Cardiff win knocks Birmingham off top of second division

LONDON, Sept 16 - Cardiff City went back on top
of the English Second Division with a convincing 4-1 win over
Luton Town at Ninian Park on Saturday.

Michael Chopra scored twice for Cardiff in the second half
and the Welsh club dominated the game after Luton had Lewis
Emmanuel sent off in the eighth minute.

Birmingham City, relegated from the Premier League last
season, were knocked off the top after being held to a 2-2 draw
at home by Ipswich Town and also had Bruno Ngotty sent off 12
minutes from time.

The rest of the chasing pack had a mixed bag of results with
third-placed Wolves losing 1-0 at Barnsley, fourth-placed
Preston drawing 1-1 at Derby County and fifth-placed Norwich
losing 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace.

Burnley, who started the day in sixth place, ended it in
third spot after winning 1-0 at Stoke City with Andy Gray
scoring the only goal in the first minute.

Sunderland's improvement under new manager Roy Keane
continued although their three-match winning run ended.

They were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Leicester City.

There was no joy for the bottom two clubs with Leeds United
losing 1-0 at Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers going down
2-1 at Colchester United.
