Athletics-Gevaert reaches 100 final, Ottey misses out

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Aug 9 - Title favourite Kim
Gevaert of Belgium booked a place in the final of the women's
100 metres by winning her heat in 11.19 on Wednesday.

Merlene Ottey did not quite make it, though, finishing the
first semi in fifth place, with the first four going through to
the final later on Wednesday (1825 GMT).

The 46-year-old Jamaican-born sprinter, who has competed for
Slovenia since 2002, faded in the last 10 metres to finish in
11.44.

"See you next year," Ottey told the crowd as she was cheered
off the track.

Britain's Joice Maduaka won the race in 11.32.

In the second semi-final, Gevaert edged ahead of Russia's
Yuliya Gushchina, who clocked 11.25.

Olympic champion Yuliya Nesterenko of Belarus was third in
11.28.
