Padres OF Barfield named NL Rookie of Month

NEW YORK -- San Diego Padres second baseman Josh
Barfield on Wednesday was named the National League Rookie of
the Month.

Barfield led all NL rookies with a .400 average and 40 hits in
July, and he also produced three home runs and 13 RBIs while
scoring 16 runs. His 40 hits were a franchise rookie record for
a month.

The son of former major leaguer Jesse Barfield, he had at least
one hit in 21 of his 26 games during the month.

Others receiving votes were Florida's Scott Olsen and Anibel
Sanchez, Los Angeles' Andre Ethier, Washington's Ryan Zimmerman,
San Francisco's Eliezer Alfonzo, New York's John Maine,
Philadelphia's Chris Coste and Milwaukee's Prince Fielder.
