Mississippi Valley State assistant killed in car wreck

ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State assistant men's
basketball coach Cecil Dowell was killed in a car accident. He was
45.

"Cecil was one of the hardest working assistant coaches you
could find and always had the best interest of young people in
mind," Mississippi Valley State coach James Green said.

The former Mississippi player was in his first year as an
assistant with the Delta Devils. The fatal accident happened
Saturday in Como, Miss., about 45 miles south of Memphis, Tenn.

Dowell, a native of Arlington, Tenn., played for the Rebels from
1980-84, helped Ole Miss reach the NIT three times and the NCAA
tournament once and was the team's most improved player in 1981.
