Jackson has preliminary hearing on Aug. 13

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan defensive back Marlin Jackson
pleaded not guilty to charges that he hit a man in the eye with a
bottle, causing an injury that required 17 stitches.

If convicted of the felonious assault and aggravated assault
charges, the second-team All-American could face up to four years
in prison and a $2,000 fine.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 13, Chief Assistant
Prosecutor Joseph Burke said Tuesday.

Burke declined to discuss the case. A police report said a
26-year-old man accused Jackson of striking him with a bottle in
the right eye June 1.

Jackson was selected the preseason defensive player of the year
in the Big Ten. The junior from Sharon, Pa., had 98 tackles and six
interceptions in his first two years with the Wolverines.
