Nebraska left the Big 12 years ago.
But in the 2014 opener, the Cornhuskers will square off against one of the Big 12's top playmakers from last season.
Former Kansas State quarterback Daniel Sams told ESPN.com on Wednesday that he will be transferring to Football Championship Subdivision school McNeese State. Sams left Kansas State this spring after his position switch from quarterback to receiver didn't work the way he had hoped. He also said he wanted to be closer to his family in Louisiana. Sams was granted a release from Kansas State to be eligible at an FCS school for the upcoming season.
It won't take long for him to be back in the limelight, though. McNeese State, which went 10-3 and made the FCS playoffs last year, opens this season at Nebraska, which was rivals with Kansas State before bolting for the Big Ten after the 2010 season.
Sams spent much of last season splitting snaps at quarterback with junior college transfer Jake Waters. He led all Big 12 quarterbacks with 807 yards rushing but lost his share of the snaps to Waters late in the season. Sams requested a position change during the offseason but was third-team on the depth chart at receiver at the end of the spring.
