100: Ashley Owens, Liberty (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Class of 2004
Owens capped her career with a stellar senior season. Indoors, she took the 60 at Simplot (high school record 7.19) and Nike Indoor. Outdoors, she swept the Great Southwest 100 and 200, then won the USATF Junior 100 with a wind-aided 11.12. She also won the World Junior 100 with a decade-best 11.13, which is still No. 2 all-time.
200: Allyson Felix, Los Angeles Baptist (North Hills, Calif.), Class of 2003
When Felix first burst upon the scene, she was immediately compared to California's previous sprint phenom -- Marion Jones. Many still regard Jones as the best female high school athlete they've ever seen, so for Felix to break many of Jones' records says volumes about her own talent.
400: Sanya Richards, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Class of 2002
An epic senior year saw Richards break the high school and junior 400 mark over the previous record-holder at 50.69 as part of a USATF Junior double. She then took silver and bronze in the World Junior 400 and 200.
800: Chanelle Price, Easton Area (Easton, Pa.), Class of 2008
Price led U.S. preps for three years in this event, including a 2:01.61 as a senior (No. 2 all-time). She also was the DyeStat Athlete of the Year as a junior, when she twice ran 2:02 outdoors and 2:04.96 indoors (No. 3 all-time).
Mile/2 Mile: Jordan Hasay, Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Class of 2009
As a junior, Hasay was the DyeStat Athlete of the Year, setting a high school record in the Olympic Trials 1,500 (4:14.50) and was No. 2 all-time in the 3,200 (9:52.13). She claimed four USATF Junior crowns, three at 1,500 and one at 3,000.
100 H: Jackie Coward, West (Knoxville, Tenn.), Class of 2008
Indoors, Coward twice won Nike titles and set high school 60H records of 8.17 as a junior and 8.16 as a senior. Outdoors, she won the Nike 100H and swept Arcadia in 2007, and in 2008 she won the Great Southwest 100H with a windy 13.00, the second-best all-conditions time ever.
300/400 H: Lashinda Demus, Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.), Class of 2001
An elite from the get-go, Demus ran 53.06 in the flat 400 as a frosh, then won USATF and Pan Am Junior 400H titles as a soph. She twice broke the 300H high school record as a senior, finishing with a still-standing 39.98, and ran No. 2 all-time for 400H at 55.76.
HJ: Inika McPherson, Memorial (Port Arthur, Texas), Class of 2005
As a senior, McPherson equaled the second-best jump of the decade outdoors at 6-02, clearing the height at her region meet. Indoors, she won at the National Scholastic with a U.S. No. 1 5-11.25.
LJ: Ychlindra Spears, Luling (Luling, Texas), Class of 2002
As a junior, Spears set her long jump best of 21-01.50 (soph class record), which ended up No. 1 at low altitude for the decade. As a senior, she led the nation in both the long jump and triple jump, setting a high school record of 44-02.25 in the latter.
TJ: Brittany Daniels, Merrill West (Tracy, Calif.), Class of 2005
Daniels was at her best as a junior in 2004, where she set a still-standing high school record of 44-11.75 at the USATF Juniors. She was also fifth in the Olympic Trials prelims.
PV: Tori Anthony, Castilleja (Palo Alto, Calif.), Class of 2007
She did it all as a senior, breaking the indoor and outdoor high school records. She is the only vaulter to clear 14 feet in both seasons. Her indoor mark of 14-02.50, from the Husky Classic, is still the best overall.
SP: Michelle Carter, Red Oak (Red Oak, Texas), Class of 2003
The daughter of boys U.S. prep record holder and former NFL lineman Michael Carter, she had a perfect senior year in the shot put with still-standing high school records indoors (54-09.50) and out (54-10.75). She also won World Youth silver in 2001 and World Junior gold in 2003.
DT: Anna Jelmini, Shafter (Shafter, Calif.), Class of 2009
The 2009 DyeStat Athlete of the Year tied, then set the high school record in the discus (190-03) and improved to No. 2 all-time in the shot (54-04.75). She swept the shot and discus at the CIF state meet and USATF Juniors, then won gold and silver at Pan Am Juniors.
JAV: Rachel Yurkovich, Newburg (Newburg, Ore.), Class of 2005
Yurkovich did it all in her senior year with the spear, dominating the event with victories at USATF Juniors, Pan Am Juniors and Golden West. At the XO Invite in Eugene, she set a still-standing high school record of 176-05.
HAM: Lauren Chambers, Kell (Marietta, Ga.), Class of 2009
She's been near the top of the weight and hammer lists her entire career, including a soph class hammer mark in 2007. Chambers pushed hard for the high school records as a senior. She wound up No. 2 all-time in both, hitting 61-07.50 in the weight and 201-06 in the hammer.
4x100, 4x200, 4x400 relays: Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.), 2004
No school has ever had a year like Long Beach Poly did in the relays in 2004. With star senior Shalonda Solomon (World Junior 200 champ, 22.82), soph standout Shana Woods and all-around sprint stars Jasmine Lee, Shana Solomon, Dashanta Harris and Chanda Picott leading the way, Poly set three still-standing high school records. First, the Jackrabbits ran a mind-boggling 1:33.87 4x200 at Arcadia, then they took the 4x100 down to 44.50 at the Penn Relays (despite losing to Vere Tech, Jamaica). Finally, at the CIF state meet, they put together an epic 3:35.49 for the 4x400.
4x800: Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, Md.), 2008
The best effort of the decade by the multiple relay powerhouse was in the 4x800 in 2008, where at the Penn Relays Roosevelt was second to Holmwood Tech, Jamaica. But with Dominque Lockhart, Amirah Johnson, Brittany Ogunomokun and Tasha Stanley, the unit obliterated the high school record by more than seven seconds with a time of 8:43.12.
DM: Warwick Valley (Warwick, N.Y.), 2008
The decade was filled with lots of outstanding distance medley relay squads, but the quartet of Tori Pennings, Kristen Jados, Claire Pettit and Lillian Greibesland trumped them all, winning Nike Outdoor with a high school record of 11:31.81.
MULTI: Shana Woods, Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.), Class of 2006
Woods could sprint, hurdle, jump and throw, so the multi-events were naturals for her. In the indoor pentathlon, she set three class records, with her 3,924 from 2006 a still-standing prep mark. In the heptathlon outdoors, she took down the record with a 5,533 at the USATF Juniors, also in 2006.
