Rest, rehab may suffice for Edgin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Left-handed reliever Josh Edgin may escape his current elbow issue with "rest and rehab," a source briefed on the matter told ESPNNewYork.com.

Mets officials were still awaiting more details from team doctor David Altchek, the source added.

A second source added that surgery -- either Tommy John, or something more benign like the removal of the bone spur that Edgin was diagnosed as having last August -- did not seem necessary.

"It doesn't seem like that at this point," that source said.

Mets officials were tight-lipped Wednesday evening, with one saying the organization would have no comment until Thursday morning.

Edgin's velocity has sagged this spring training. A day after his last Grapefruit League appearance, Edgin acknowledged with elbow and arm discomfort on Tuesday.

He was supposed to undergo an MRI in Florida, but eventually was dispatched to New York, where he was examined by Altchek on Wednesday.

If Edgin were to open the season on the disabled list, the Mets would have limited options to fill that left-handed relief void. Scott Rice allowed five runs (four earned) while recording only two outs in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. Rule 5 pick Sean Gilmartin and Dario Alvarez also are candidates.
