Liberty trade for All-Star point guard Shoni Schimmel

NEW YORK -- The New York Liberty acquired All-Star point guard Shoni Schimmel from the Atlanta Dream for a 2017 second-round draft pick, the team announced Monday.

Schimmel, the eighth pick in the 2014 draft, has made the All-Star team in each of her first two seasons in the WNBA. She has averaged 8.0 points, 3.4 assists and 1.5 3-pointers.

"Shoni Schimmel has demonstrated she can shine on a big stage, and I am confident that with the leadership on our coaching staff and on our team she will thrive as a member of the New York Liberty playing at Madison Square Garden," Liberty team president Isiah Thomas said.

"Shoni is good fit for our style of play. Her long-range shooting will really allow us to spread the floor on the offensive end. She takes pride in giving back to the community and she shares the same core values we look for in every member of our team."

She was the MVP of the 2014 All-Star Game when she scored 29 points. Schimmel provides the Liberty with depth at the guard spot and is a proven 3-point shooter.

Schimmel struggled last season when she reported to Dream training camp out of shape. She worked to improve her fitness over the season, but showed up out of shape again this year, making her expendable.

She is expected to join the Liberty on Tuesday. New York faces Minnesota on Thursday in an exhibition game before opening the season on May 14 in Washington.
