BEREA, Ohio -- Mount St. Joseph freshman Lauren Hill scored the first layup of her college career with her left hand. For her next two, she decided to go with her right. With 8:06 left in Friday's game against Bethany College, Hill checked into the game and received the loudest cheer of the night. She lined up on the right elbow and, once the ball was inbounded, cut across the lane to the left block. Her teammate gave her a bounce pass from the wing. Hill took one dribble to her right and hit a layup over a Bethany defender. The fact the layup was with Hill's right hand is remarkable. The play is designed to go to the left because Hill has lost strength on the right side of her body due to the effects of inoperable brain cancer. But, as her mom, Lisa, said in the stands after her daughter scored: "She's a bold girl." Bold enough, in fact, to make a four-hour drive with her parents, younger brother and sister from the Cincinnati area to Baldwin Wallace College, where her team was playing its second game of the season. "The team is part of her family," Lisa said. "We knew we were coming. It was whether or not she would play or be in a wheelchair. It just depends on the day." On this night, Hill came not only to cheer on her teammates, but to make a statement by adding two more points to her career scoring total. "It was good to see her out there one more time," said her father, Brent.
