Brittney Griner, Johnson engaged

Women's basketball stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson are engaged.

News broke of Griner's engagement to Tulsa Shock star Glory Johnson on Friday night. Griner had a wide smile when asked about it Saturday after scoring a team-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting in the Phoenix Mercury's 76-69 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, which tied the WNBA record for wins with 28.

"Yeah, I'm off the market. I became a very happy person," Griner said. "It was a good day, and today was a good day because we got the win. "

Johnson didn't play in Tulsa's season finale one day after the news broke of her engagement. Illness was the official reason given for Johnson sitting out. She averaged 14.7 points and 9.2 rebounds while starting the Shock's first 33 games, including six points and one rebound in 11 minutes of Tulsa's loss at Atlanta on Friday night.

Griner appeared to have proposed to Johnson and both posted it on social media, with Griner showing a photo of her on one knee with a ring in her hand in front of Johnson on her Instagram account.

In the post, Griner wrote: "Last Night was a Night to Remember(,) I became the happiest person on this earth! (almost pass out but when that one word came out I came back to life) Me and my baby (at)missvol25 are in it for Life!"

Johnson also had a photo on her Instagram account of Griner lying in bed with an engagement ring resting on her shoulder.

Griner has embraced her role as a prominent gay athlete since finishing a record-breaking career at Baylor. She came out last year and wrote a candid memoir, "In My Skin," that was critical of college coach Kim Mulkey.

The 6-foot-8 center, drafted first overall by Phoenix last year, has helped lead the Mercury to a WNBA-best 28-5 record. She is averaging 15.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.9 blocks.

Johnson is in her third season with Tulsa. The 6-foot-3 forward played at Tennessee.
