Diamond DeShields to leave UNC

Women's College Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

Diamond DeShields is transferring from North Carolina, coach Sylvia Hatchell said Thursday.

DeShields, who was the ACC freshman of the year, led the Tar Heels to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008. It is unclear where she will play next.

"I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave The University of North Carolina," Hatchell said in a statement. "It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well."

DeShields, who set the UNC freshman single-game and single-season scoring records for the Tar Heels, averaged 18.0 points and 5.4 rebounds. Along with Allisha Gray, Jessica Washington and Stephanie Mavunga, DeShields was one of four freshmen who played a major role in the Tar Heels' 27-10 season.

DeShields scored 15 points in the Tar Heels' final game, a 74-65 loss to Stanford in the NCAA tournament.

DeShields was the espnW national freshman of the year.
