Do they use HANS devices for added protection in these lower level racing events?

Tracks either do recomend the use of a HANS or a neck restraint, or they make it mandatory in order to race. If I am correct, they have to have them up in New York to be able to race

One of my lasting memories of Leffler was leaving Daytona mad as all h.ell after he stuffed Jr. in the wall in turn 4 on the last lap of the Winn-Dixie 250 in 2004. Wild finish.

Sprint Car racing is considered "big boy" racing in my book. You have to be fearless and have big balls to strap into one of these machines. Driving these cars in my opinion requires more guts than playing any other sport. Driving 150mph on dirt with little protection and then throwing it full speed into a turn, without lifting, takes courage and a sack, let alone doing it next to another car. As a fan like myself, I am in awe everytime I see these 410 Sprints race. Unfortunately, this crash shows us that anything can happen in the blink of an eye. No matter how skilled you are, no matter how much you think you are in control, it can happen to the best drivers. RIP Jason Leffler, you will be missed.

I'm with you there. I love the WoO. Great racing without the hype and fanfare of bigger series. The fact that Jeff Gordon was driving those beasts at just 16 years old blows me away.

I sympathize greatly for Leffler's son -- I lost my mom on Mother's Day when I was six years old and it's haunted me for the last seventeen years. I hope everything turns out alright for him. Rest in peace, Jason. You'll be sorely missed in the NASCAR world.

"Sprint car races can be more dangerous for drivers and spectators because the safety measures taken by series aren't at the same level. Many facilities lack the SAFER barriers that are standard in NASCAR and IndyCar, and the cars aren't always adequately protected." That whole statement is dumb, and the last line is a joke. Have you seen the fences at Sprint Car tracks? They're rather tall and meant to collect debris. But, when you get a Sprint Car flipping, because they're open wheeled, things go flying and it's up to God at that point. And a SAFER barrier for a Sprint car isn't going to do anything. It's the nature of open wheeled racing.

The only way to fix it is do something similar to what Indy did and try cover the wheels. Not to mention the fact that you're basically in a cage with quite a bit of exposure. I'm one for safety by all means, and hopefully no one else suffers a tragedy but with this style of racing those are the risks and you accept it. I know several Sprint Car racers, and even have family that works as the medical crew at a very popular Sprint Car track.

Always tough to hear news like this. Best wishes to his family especially his little boy. I love racing like crazy (going to the IndyCar race in Milwaukee this weekend in fact) but man, it can be a seriously brutal and uncaring thing sometimes.

EngineerGuY - You ever been to Kokomo? It's about an hour north of Indianapolis up US 31. That might be the best track in the world. Racing is always amazing up there. I love the speed the WoO bring to the table, just always been a nonwing guy myself.

That hurts to hear this I feel so bad for his son and his family being a race fan for almost two decades plenty of drivers have died but Leffler was so underrated turner motorsports should've held on to him after a top 6 finish in the standings in 11 my thoughts and prayers go out to his son and family

The same thing happened to Cole Whitt. Glad to see him back out even if it is only for 5 races. Hope Kyle Larson can keep his deal goin.

Money drives those teams and if you can't bring money/sponsership/both to the table, then see you your gone. Its a shame because some of these guys have a ton of talent yet do not get into a great ride because of lack of money!

Yes Turner Motorsports should've held onto him after finishing 6th but this is the same Turner Motorsports team that released Reed Sorenson that same year with 5 races left while Reed was sitting 3rd in standings and still had a chance(with a little luck) at the championship.

This is not trolling or being disrespectful, but really the state police are looking into what caused the accident? Ummm this didn't happen on highway 10, it happened on an oval dirt track...pretty sure high rates of speed and racing were perhaps some of the reasons behind fatal accident???

In NJ all accidents involving a death and an automobile must be investigated by law enforcement. It's a state law. It doesn't mean that a law was broken or there was foul play. It's just the way the state handles it. A matter of fact in all states law enforcement is involved in all deaths. They just don't announce it as an investigation

Im also assuming, just a strange way to put it I guess..I really didn't know that state police had to investigate racing accidents..

I've never heard of it before, it's a new one by me. I frequent Lawrenceburg in SE Indiana nd I've seen some nasty accidents, but never have heard of it involving an investigation.

Really wish ESPN would have World of Outlaws sprint series updates in their racing section. A good majority of NASCAR drivers come from open wheel sprints. The best racing you will ever see is on dirt, and the WoO sprint series. Simply amazing. RIP to Jason!

a 6/10th of a mile high banked dirt track? Dang, they must be hauling there.

5/8th of a mile when you run the bottom at bridgeport, and it isn't that banked. ESPN doesn't know what they are talking about when it comes to local tracks

With a wing. Yeah, I'm sure they get it there. Take the wings off and put them on a smaller track, then you see what good racing is.

Best track ever for dirt, Eldora Speedway now owned by Tony Stewert! Never seen a better race than at that track!
