OXNARD, Calif. -- One of the best examples for Dez Bryant on how to overcome a wretched upbringing and become an elite NFL player and role model shares the huddle with the 23-year-old receiver just a...

Witten's situation pales in comparison to Dez's and he had one MAJOR advantage over Dez...Witten is white which means everything in the United States (especially). Besides, he actually had a father that was willing to raise him. And his father probably had a job.

Victim mentality.. everything is harder if you're black. Bull$###! Life is hard for all of us. Your circumstances aren't harder than others because of your race, it's harder because of the decisions you make in life.

I dont get why everyone is hating on ball4real. im white and i agree with everything he said. It looks as if dez had it alot harder than witten did and partly because he was black. you have to be pretty ignorant to deny that. and chasemanlv, youre the idiot, i dont know how you got anything you said from what ball4real said

That's a pretty racist statment, ball4real. So, essentially what you're saying is that ALL blacks who don't have a father aren't responsible human beings? Is that what you're saying? Because if it is then I think you're an idiot. What do you say to all those w/o a father or mother that do go on to do wonderful things in their lives? Who actually takes responsibility with themselves, go to school, study and graduate from high school or college. There are plenty of black people who actually care about their education, and what happens afterwards. Then there are those who use the one parent as an excuse to screw up their lives by getting in trouble, doing drugs, stealing, etc. Just because you have a one parent household doesn't make you want to go out and do bad things. How about taking responsiblity and having respect for yourself and those around you?

So because Witten and his family are white, he's had it easier in life and is partly why he has succeeded as a man, football, and athlete? My goodness, I hope you're not voting come November. Praying you're a troll.

You're a half idiot. The last two sentences are correct, the second sentence is moronic. There are plenty of black NFL players who don't get in trouble.

You have to not want to be a P.O.S. in order to not be one. Excuses and having his asskissed his entire athletic life is all Dez knows. It's much too hard to do what is right when you have a bag full of excuses and unlimited asskissers in your back pocket. I doubt the boy from Tennessee had a bag full of excuses and pity following him around. He over came because he wanted to and had the character along with the talent to do so. Blaming others is America's new past time.

Good article. Glad to see Witten doing well. I hope these guys take a dedicated approach to guiding and mentoring Dez. I don't know him, but I can't believe he is a bad kid at all. He could have used many excuses to get in all kinds of trouble growing up and maybe never even finish high school. But he's excelled in atheletics and now has an opportunity to excel in life. Best to you Dez. God's best... GO HARD!!!

I love how everyone criticizes Dez and calls him names and judges him. Now ask yourself this question: Did you have a meal on the table every night? Did you have a table to put a damn meal on? We don't know what it was like for this kid growing up. JJT can write about it. Person A, B, and C can write about it, but we will NEVER understand what this young man went through. Does it excuse him for his actions? Uhh, well, we don't even know what actions took place. Half of you people are overweight alcoholics with dead end jobs anyway. Who are you to criticize Dez? He's done enough good for himself to make it to the damn NFL hasn't he? I went to high school with a kid who started D1 as a true freshman in the Big 12. He came from nothing. And guess what? He sold/smoked weed and got in fights and was kicked out of school and went back to having nothing before his sophomore year. You people point out everything Dez does wrong. From his mistakes off the field to his production on the field (Which is ridiculous considering he was 2nd on the team in every statistical category in only his second year, with zero off-seasons.) Let this thing die down. PLEASE!

He has done well for himself, but his off the field behavior is holding him back. Witten is a good role model for him. No their circumstances are not the same, but Witten is somebody that Dez can look up to. Yes, the criticism of Dez is harsh, but at the same time, we can't keep making excuses for him and holding him to a different standard because he had a difficult childhood. He deserves to be held accountable. He deserves to be held to the same standards as other citizens/employees. You can't keep treating a victim like a victim, or you will continue to do damage. Dez needs good role models in his life (we all do), and Witten can be that role model. I think the point of the article was a good one.

I think JJT makes a solid point but to me they need to let the story fade. The season is starting in ernest and unless he is suspended or has another problem this should become a non-issue. I think everyone( unfortunately) including Dez understands where he is in his life and what he has to do to move forward. Let's concentrate on football.

Not eveyone has it good growing up.. but ive always said you can do one of two things... you can either waller in the mud of self pity or you can pull up your boot straps and overcome your raising. Dez has every opportunity to do just that...a boat load of money and a lot of talent with a bright future ahead of him in playing a game that only a select few ever get to play. You have to get on with life or it will leave you behind. Its as simple as that.

OMG JJT another lame attempt for you to play psychologist. While these might be similar why don't you be a real journalist and explore the differences. (1) Witten was eleven when his mother moved. Dez had no place to move too. He slept wherever he could up until he went to college. (2) Jason Witten's mother was the victim in your scenario, Dez's mother was quite often the villain, while Dez might have been the victim. (3) Jason Witten moved in with his Grandfather at 11. This means he had a male role model who didn't beat him, nor pimp his drug addicted mother in front of Him. Your article sucks. If you truly can lead people astray without any nuances to the thoughts in your article, you suck as an individual. The truest statement in this article is where Jason Witten said "I'm sure others had it harder than me." True His name is Dez Bryant. I understand that writing about Dez gets people to pay attention to the crappy writer team of Watkins, Taylor, and McMahon, but seriously guys you can do better. Maybe you can't but ESPN.dallas can.

Look Mechanic, you sir an idiot. First because you think that McMahon is somehow different. Secondly JJT was not talking about drawing strength he was suggesting that the situations were similar and I was merely stating that the nuances were different. I work with at risk teens and would never suggest that abuse is ok or not a big deal. So with all due respect shut your dumb a$$ up!

I agree with Trinity on this. Witten had someone that cared enough to take him out of the situation, and give him male support. Dez had nothing, had to fend for himself and still went to school and got into college. Witten is a favorit of mine, but much respect to Dez.

A. Don't put McMahon in that group. He's a damn good writer. B. He is simply saying Dez can find comfort and relate to his teammates regarding the situation he grew up with. Is it the exact same situation? No. But if you don't think an eleven year old boy watching his mother get beat by his father is traumatizing, then YOU sir, suck as an individual. You pin it off as Dez having the worse of the two situations when the article clearly says, "This isn't about who had it worse." JJT is simply saying there are guys within the locker room who he can look to. You and the 3 people who liked what you said have zero sense.

Speak the truth. Bryant is a grown man and it's time for him to start acting like it. I had a hard childhood, too, but I never once have had the police called on me, and I have a job and support my family. He's got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and if he blows it he's got no one to blame but himself. Kudos to Witten, too, for managing to overcome his childhood. But there are a LOT of guys in the Cowboys' camp who haven't been written about. How about giving us info about them?

You are also not a member of the Dallas Cowboys, nor did you go from having nothing to having everything you could dream of overnight. The kid is working hard, give him some slack.

Why does it seem that you only write about Dez? The Cowboys have plenty of players that didn't come up with wealth or had issues growing up but you choose every time to pick on Mr. Bryant. I guess they made you his security so you can have something to write cause you only have stories about Dez . You suck
