BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- While Chicago Bears first-year general manager Phil Emery talked methodically about Phase I and Phase II of the transition period, joked about the upgrade in housing from when he...

what a great way to end the article in those last two sentences. hate the packers with all my heart and soul and we finally have enough offensive firepower to keep up, and then, blow them out of the water

Realistically, the Bears have a great shot at the Super Bowl the next two years. A. NFC is waaaaay better than the AFC B. Green Bay is great and will win the division, meaning they'll have to play in the elements in the depths of winter. NOT what they are designed for. C. Phili is also gonna make a run this year, but not a lot of depth for them and they struggle against our system. D. Not enough balance from any other contender. NO/DET pass reliant, 49ers have weak offense, TB/DAL just not good enough and NYG just don't put it together consecutively.

Isaacson after an 11-5 season, #5 spot: "Yeah, Bears are in the playoffs but Green Bay won the division." Isaacson after advancing to the NFC Championship: "Yeah, they beat Alex Smith in the playoffs and barely beat Green Bay in Green Bay where they haven't won a home playoff game in since 2007!" Isaacson after winning the Super Bowl: "Chicago beat Houston in the SB which is no big deal caues Houston has never made it before... They have no future cause they have the #32 pick in the draft."

Injury's are the ONLY thing that will limit this team from being a top 5 team!!!!!!

I can't see how anyone can refrain from comparing this team to that Super Bowl squad we are not that many years removed from. Yes, the D was a lot younger. But, all those core pieces are still here, and oh yeah, quite a few just went to the Prowl Bowl last year. So, with the obvious addition of Peppers and a few others since then, I'd say our D is much better than that squad. So lets look at our Offense. Ehh ... Err .... Grossman/Muhammad { } Cutler/Marshall. On second thought, do we even need to compare offenses? My point is, that squad got to the big show in pretty impressive fashion. To think this team can't compete is completely nuts in my eyes. That said, yes. Let's not get ahead of ourselves until we prove it on the field. We all saw what happened to the paper champion Eagles last year.

Melton was top 3 in sacks for defensive tackles last year. TOP 3.

Not to be a downer, but the Bears style of D is predicated on the under tackle getting a great push--causing havoc up the middle. I don't know that anyone on the current roster can consistently do that.

You are forgetting a paramount piece of the 2006 team that the 2012 team does not have: A young, healthy, dominating Tommy Harris.

People make too big of a deal out of age. What matters is the level they're playing at. The only thing that age should bring up right now for this team is the idea that they'll have to look to replace some of these guys before too long. However, with a better offense there should be more good, sustained drives, and therefore more time of possession for the offense. This will help to stretch the defense out even more and have them in better shape at the end of the season.

No reason to think this roster can't make a serious run at a championship. The bears top to bottom are as talented as any team out there. Health is my only concern when it comes to this team. I like the thought of this defense being in a position to start protecting leads instead of having to try and carry the team the entire game. With the weapons we have on offense this should be a career year for Cutler, I'm expecting MVP level numbers from him this year.

Im putting Cutler around 4000-4500 yards this year. He won't be MVP, but like you said, I do expect great things from him. Bears on paper have a Super Bowl caliber team. It's gonna come down to can the defense stay healthy and still play at a high level. If they can, things could be looking very good for this team come January/February

Hey Melissa, you basically wrote the same article as Brad Biggs of the Tribune, except his was worth reading.

That's probably because they were both there at the same time when those people spoke to the media. It would also be the first thing Brad Biggs wrote that has been readable in years, unless he's making up new Johnny Knox trade demands.

Let's not get too carried away here. Usually when someone makes guarantees without playing a regular season game, the football gods whip their behinds and hand it back to them (Ahem, Eagles... *cough*cough*, Jets). There's no reason to be cocky when 31 other teams are listening to you brag. Lovie needs to squash this bull $@%! before it gets out of hand.

Pretty sure no one on the Bears said we are a dream team or we are going to the Super Bowl. Lovie simply said, this is the best team he has coached.

I'm not a fan of female sports writers on MALE sports....Plenty of female sports for them to write about. Women calling a Football game makes THAT game UN-WATCHABLE!!!!

Just remember, Cutler had 2 weapons to go down field. We had no choice but to go in to free agency and get weapons. Hopefully everything works out and we can get ourselves into a nice draft building mode. Emery, IMO, has done as good a job as any new GM coming into a semi trainwreck can do.

It's great that a lot of the post draft hate for Emery has died down. I saw some pretty ridiculous things being said there.
