This was the last game my grandmother was coherent for and will forever remember the walk off home run by Cody Ross! She was a lifelong Sox fan, loved watching and listening to the games, and wore her Trot Nixon number 7 jersey with pride. She appreciated the way Trot played the game and I know that appreciation for number 7 carried on to Cody Ross. If Cody ever reads this, I wish to thank him for sending a life long Sox fan on to her next adventure with a smile and one last cheer for her home town team - Thanks -

about time a player performs wearing the #7. we all know Trot and Drew were wastes of money. This team is getting healthy and starting to actually look like a contender. Lets hope it keeps up.

Now, I wouldn't go the "waste of money" route. I don't think either player was that. But that said ..... THANK YOU!!! Finally someone else who realizes how over-rated Trot Nixon was. Yeah, great, he was a "dirt dog". That's fine for the people who think "HE PLAYS HAHD!" is more important than actually being good. Nixon missed as many if not more games than Drew. Doesn't matter if you miss them because you ran through a wall or pulled a hammy rounding second. And healthy, Drew was a far better player than Trot was.

Yes it does matter how u get hurt,AND how hurt u are. J.D. Drew would refuse to play. if his baby toe,or pinky hurt .. Trot would be out there with a bad back, bad shoulder, and bad knees. And he also cared more about the game, winning, and the fans.

Trot a waste of money?? He was the ultimate grinder and had a 3-year stretch in the early 2000's where he put up 24,27, and 28 HR's while making a modest annual salary of well under $5M. He was one of the most beloved Red Sox of the past decade and played his a** off for this franchise every single game.

Ivesty must be a pink hat who just started watching baseball in 2006. Trot busted his ba**s, on every play, and every game, and had many great catches and clutch hits. Remember, it was his 3 run double(just missed a Grand Slam) that put game 4(clinching game), away for the Sox in 2004 W/S

Pretty sad celebration for winning a game in July. You would have thought they had just won the World Series. Act like you have won before.

While I agree with you that these single game in the middle of the season celebrations are ridiculous, this is hardly a Boston phenomenon. EVERY team does it now. Even the Stankees.

There are only 2 problems left with this team as far as I can tell. Beckett and Lester. Get rid of Beckett and that should fix Lester. I wonder if Miami would reverse the 07 deal and give back Hanley for Beckett??? No way I'd trade Crawford for him though.

Remember when the Sox won a few games in a row and then were going out to face Oakland and Seattle. That was the last supposed turning point. This team has trouble preventing runs, not scoring them. At the moment, they're hardly dangerous.

At this point, I think Buch has established himself as the Ace, Doubront and Cook have become two of the better bottom of the rotation guys in the league, and Beckett has been improving. In my mind, if the Sox add Garza or Lester returns to anything near his old form, this team is good enough to go deep. You look at that road trip out west, 4 of those losses were 1-run games, 3 of them walk-offs. That was just a tough-luck trip that could happen to any team. I have been hard on this team all year, but things actually have started feeling different since the break/return of most of the lineup. Thinking about things when ortiz returns, it's frightening...

As stated, their offense has been fine. They've scored a ton of runs. Before the year, even healthy, there were concerns - a #3 with one year of over 100ip coming off major surgery, a supposed ace who hasn't put up true ace numbers recently, an inconsistent #2, and two ex bullpen guys as 4-5s. Plus, a downgraded bullpen. Doubrount has exceeded expcetations, and BUCHHOLZ is showing signs. But the rest of the rotation is too inconsistent, and there's too many other teams in the mix to consider Boston anything other than a big longshot until they actually do something to prove it.

Ok, let's discuss. When they went out to Oakland/Seattle they didn't have Ellsbury, Crawford, Bucholtz and Pedroia shouldn't have been playing. So yeah, this has a much better shot of actually changing their fortunes.

They're always going to score runs because of their ballpark, but I'll admit I haven't looked at their splits. The media is just afraid to call this team what it is - a complete mess of underperforming stars, injuries, and a laughable clubhouse. They should not be feared at all until they give a legitimate reason.

Seriously where have you been for the past year? Starting in September when they collapsed it was the chicken and bear and then this year calling players out on things. Ortiz has come out a couple times and blamed the media for making a big deal out of everything, by the way that's their jobs, and now you have Lester saying that if the media prints it enough then the Red Sox will do it (refering to trading people). Again another player blaming the media. I think they just aren't used to the media actually calling them on things unlike in the past.

That's been their problem for the last few years. They put up scary offensive numbers, but they're consistently in the bottom third of the league in ERA, runs allowed, etc.

Here's espn putting them on the front page. they're really rallying behind their team. A team that only has a shot at the playoffs because Selig created a spot for them.

And, for the record, the A's were the first highlight shown on baseball tonight after their walkoff win. It was just the late addition, a result of them playing on the west coast. nyyfan is just getting all bent out of shape because he sees his rival developing some chemistry at the right time and it looks like fun.

still don't think they would overtake tex/ana/chisox/tigers/rays who are all in that mix
303 Days ago
>
M1Pringle
So if they jump over Det and then Det jumps over Chicago aren't the Sox ahead of Chicago? Really you can't see that? I won't forget about the Rays believe me they did it last year and they could do it again this year no doubt, just saying it's not as impossible as you think it is.
>
nyyfan555
its not just LA and Det. its tex and chisox as well because those division races are close, so the angels/tigers will prob fight for first so its a total of 4 teams to contend with. and i've learned over the last couple of years to never forget the rays. u should too
303 Days ago
>
M1Pringle
There are 4 teams ahead of them right now in the WC standings (not including the division leaders) with Det and LA leading (1 game up on the Sox) and Oakland and Baltimore right ahead of them (.5 game up on the Sox). Now I think we can all agree that Balt and Oak will slide back to earth soon so they are a non factor so really there are 2 teams in front of them. Tell me how they can't jump over them?
>
M1Pringle
How do you figure it's only because Selig created a spot for them? They are 1 game out of the WC spot (take away the second WC and they are still a game out).

Teams starting to pull together. Hope this is a turning point as far as team chemistry. Still a great deal of talent on this roster to make a run and a large portion of the season to go. I'm really liking the Red Sox chances!

The Red Sox are finally beginning to make me shut up and it's a welcome thing. I thought that they should have blown this team up this past offseason (and still think that they should trade away some of the players on the team) but they seem to be playing good ball at the right time. Still think that they need a little something to help them out in the starting rotation but not at the big cost that other GMs are going to ask for. Think that in the offseason they should visit a trade for Beckett (just don't think his heart is in it anymore), Lester (really seems he wants out of Boston after those comments the other day) and Ellsbury (Boras has already said that the starting point for his next contract will be Matt Kemp's 8 year $160 million) and try to get some pieces that can help in the future.

Not a chance I give Ellsbury an 8/160 contract. He is a good player and his speed at the top of the lineup is huge but I agree with M1 - he's had some injury issues and I wouldn't be able to justify paying that money for a player who's best asset is speed. I said the same thing about Crawford.
>
mybraindecays
I am not sure if I would give him that contract either but you are downplaying Ellsbury's value. Sure he has speed. He also hit the second most home runs for Boston last year. He is a gold glove outfielder. His OPS has gone up every year and he is young. His WAR is also getting better and better. He has had some injuries but nothing muscle or elbow related. Two years ago we tried to rush him back from broken ribs.

>
Taftreign
If its 8 and 160 I would consider it. I just dont want to see 24 or 25 per year. Hes still young and speedy guys tend to age well and have value at a later period so the length is fine. Just got to be willing to take a risk on him staying healthy. If they wanted to trade him last offseason his value was never higher.

>
M1Pringle
He's had 1 really good year offensively and it's hard to keep him on the field so why would they spend that much money on him? I think that way too much money for him, and they lost him when they signed Crawford.

holyhendrix
Gotta keep Ellsbury.
>
M1Pringle
At what cost? He's not a $20 million a year player, and no neither is Crawford, so I don't see this group making the same mistake twice. He's injury prone and had really 1 good offensive year so at what cost do you keep him?
