Extending Tony Romo is beneficial

IRVING, Texas -- Technically, Tony Romo is signed through 2016. However, the final three years of his deal with the Dallas Cowboys will void after next season as a result of a restructuring of his co...

Tony Romo is a top 10 quarterback, and maybe even better than that. He has an excellent touchdown to interception ratio, mobility, a strong arm and makes good reads. The Cowboys went 6 years before they could find a good quarterback to follow Troy Aikman. Hopefully, Romo will play for a while. He keeps the Cowboys in games. He gives them a fighting chance.

Shoudn't he win something first? Don't give me the qb can't do it all crap. Colts won the SB with Manning and won the 1st pick of the draft without him.

Correct! We blew how many fourth quarter leads last season? Four off the top of my head! There is not an owner/coach/fan base in the league that would not want to consistently enter the fourth quarter with double digit leads. Our defense was atrocious, not Romo.

It is not Romo's fault that the Cowboys do not win consistently. Their defense has been awful.

in 2010 with peyton, they were still 10-6 and made the playoffs and lost to the jets by only 1 point in the playoff game they go from 10-6 to 2-14 without peyton so he basically carried that team for years.. and i believe brady carries the pats too, as they win and lose with his arm

Brady turns 35 in August and is coming of a 36-touchdown, four-interception season. New Orleans' Drew Brees is 33 and threw for a league-record 5,476 yards in 2011. It has been so far, so good with Peyton Manning, 36, in Denver after he missed last year because of neck surgery. Brett Favre and Kurt Warner played well into their late 30s and, in Favre's case, his 40s. ------------- If this does not tell you the rules are now bent in favor of QBs, then nothing will. They're more joy stick controllers than real football players at this point.

But are you ready to put Romo in that class? Sure, elite QB's can play well into their 30's, but most NFL QB's begin to slow down. Romo is very good, not sure I'd say his name and Manning together

With Romo at the QB we have one of the best chance to win it all for the first time in years. Bledso, carter and all the other bums that started would not give us a chance, Kitna was even a decent backup..better than bledsoe carter. Now that we seemed to finally be focused on making our defense better our team will inherently(hope i used this word correctly) get better. Romo has all of the pieces and you see how much BETTER he was when Murray was on the field...who would Aikman had been without Emmitt..No freakin body..FACT....ROmo and Cowboy haters watch what happens this season now that Romo has healthy positions on his side and defensive side.

In other words they need him...we need him..he is an elite QB and possibly has a defense to back him up now..damn I can not wait for this season to start I am hype already

Lock him up and give this team stability. They have young position players on the rise on both sides of the ball with Bryant, Murray, Smith, Lee, Carr and Claiborne. Do not set this team back by trying to find another QB. Dallas has put together two very good drafts they could very well be on the rise. Romo is getting better anyone who disagrees with that is insane.

Exactly, and how do you plan to keep all of those youngsters on the rise with Romo's enormous new salary?

I think another winless playoff season should get all these Romo lovers off the bandwagon. I don't really care what his stats look like, if that's all you really care about, then you are a loser. I want a playoff win...com on, at least one win.

you see, stats might not mean that much to you, but stats mean that "someone" is at least doing their damn job...which is Romo. But I suppose you want Romo to make those fields goals, and make those catches, too....I guess Patrick Clayton's two dropped potential games winning TD passes are Romo's fault. I guess Romo should have been there when Dallas's defense decided to take the day off. The only difference between Romo and a QB like Brady or Payton Manning are a couple of missed field goals and a couple of dropped passes. Point?? It's a team sport, idiot.

another moronic comment...Jerry doesn't play. He is doing his best to put the best team he can on the field. So it isnt Jerry who is holding us back. It is Ryan's defense. You show me one owner or GM who does a better job year after year. He does have 3 SB rings guys...and he isn't a dummy like most of his detractors think. YOu don't get to be in his position without being on top of the game. EVERYONE and his brother cried all last year that the CB's were patsys...so he did his best to fix it. Now the DMN and JJT are whining about the Safety position...it is a never ending bunch of bellyachers who write dumb comments who make me sick.

I'd like to point out that while technically six seasons transpired from the end of Aikman's era as the Cowboys starting QB to the beginning of Romo's, it did not actually take the Cowboys six years to find Aikman's eventual replacement in Romo. Troy was waived after the 2000 season and retired in April of 2001. Romo was signed as an undrafted free agent in April of 2003, almost exactly two years after Aikman's retirement. From the time Romo signed in 2003 till the time he became the full-time starter in 2006, the Cowboys drafted exactly zero quarterbacks in any round whatsoever. The only noteworthy competition even brought in for Romo was Drew Henson who costed a 2005 3rd round pick. The Cowboys may have waited four seasons to start Romo, but since his acquisition, did not appear like a team desperately trying to find a franchise QB. The Cowboys brought in stopgaps like Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe to try to compete during the seasons between 2001-2006, but neither of those guys were brought in to be the long term solutions. My point is that the Cowboys did not have to try that hard to replace Aikman, and found his replacement two years after he retired. If they were desperately trying to find a developmental QB other than Romo to groom as a future franchise QB, they probably would have drafted somebody during those 4 years after Romo signed, most likely somebody in the first three rounds of any of those drafts. With that said, the Cowboys probably shouldn't make any future decisions based on the misconception that replacing Troy was a drastically difficult and time-consuming endeavor. I am a fan of Romo, and I want him on this team as the QB, but I do not believe they need to resign him right now, especially because of fear that replacing him will be difficult. The two years left on Romo's deal will tell us everything we need to know regarding a future contract for him. Just because a quarterback looks good at 31 or 32 does not mean he will look the same at age 34, let alone beyond that. Similarly, who knows what position the Cowboys will be in within two years? What if Romo gets hurt next year and we end up with the number 1 pick and a guy like Andrew Luck is sitting there? It is doubtful, but just one scenario that could unfold that could render a prematurely large contract a bad decision. Did the Colts think Peyton would never play a down for them after he signed that $90 million deal with them? No, and that goes to show what kind of unpredictability the NFL has, and why locking up players two years before it is needed is seldom a good idea, especially when the player is already into his 30s in age. If the player's contract expires and he's still performing at a high level, you may have to pay more but you can always retain him by franchising or tendering him. If it goes downhill though, you save a lot of money and more importantly, cap space and flexibility for the team's future.

I'm not a Romo-hater by any means, in fact, I like Romo and wear his jersey on game days, but was simply saying that we should not resign him right now. You don't know what can happen in two years, and its usually not the best idea to extend players two years in advance, especially when they are above 30.

I agree on your point about waiting to extend Romo if doing it at all. However, while its possible to find those late round gems or undrafted stars (ex. Brady, 6th rd), its more the exception rather than the norm. On the opposite end, very rarely do first round QB's not preform at a high level. The following is a list of every first round QB since 2000: Chad Pennington, Michael Vick, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich, Rex Grossman, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Big Ben, JP Losman, Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers, Jason Campbell, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Andrew Luck, RGIII Long list, but you'll notice most of those on the list, while not necessarily HOF material, went on to at least have successful careers. Only a few I would label as complete busts, the biggest being JaMarcus Russell. Furthermore, the success rate rises greatly as their position in which they were picked increases. You'll notice that basically everyone we consider elite today or even close to elite status for that matter was a high first round draft choice. Even if the next QB we draft isn't a stud, there's a good chance he can be. And if Dallas moves up in the draft to get one of the top picks, he's almost garunteed to play very well. The second part of this is that by the money saved not locking up Romo, we can secure our offensive weapons and defensive stars. And even if the draft pick isn't elite, there is enough offensive talent on this team to negate that. Dez and Miles are explosive receivers, combined with the punch of Murray and Jones. Ultimately, while we agree on a more wait-and-see approach with Romo, I'm favoring taking a high draft pick on a QB; the error rate is very low and we become a better team by it.

I guess I didn't iterate my point correctly - I was trying to emphasize that find Troy's replacement as a franchise qb was not as tedious and difficult as some in the media have suggested. They act like the cowboys tried nonstop for 6 years to find a qb before landing Romo, yet never mention the basis behind this thinking except to name the string of QB's who started games since Aikman retired. Yes there were a few seasons where we dealt with a revolving door at QB, but we already had the next franchise qb on the roster during that point so they did not have to still find another one, moreover, if the cowboys were desperate to find a new franchise qb, they probably would have drafted one in the first or second round at any point during the supposed six year QB-less frenzy (Two years of which were played by Bledsoe/Testaverde and another year by Quincy Carter)

It's not a question of if Romo is good and warrants a new contract, it's if a megadeal makes sense for Dallas right now. And my answer to that would be "no". Any fan stating that they don't want Romo back because he "sucks" is ignorant of football in general and any fan professing the need to "just sign him" is ignorant of this team and its future.

Romo is a fantastic QB, probably top 5 in the NFL, but to give him an extension now would be pretty stupid. He's 32 years old right now, and you're probably looking at at least a 5 year deal for a ton of money per season. It's rare when a QB can dominate late into his career, certainly the exception vs. the rule. If Romo gets a new contract, where does the money come from for the new infusion of youth? I'd rather invest in upside with a high QB draft pick and lock up some of the current players as opposed to paying at a high point.

I can't wait for Romo to prove you haters wrong. If this defense plays to potential, and he has a health Murray running the ball so defenses have to defend something more than the pass, the 'Boys will prosper, and it will prove Romo is a great QB. And the tired argument of him being undrafted is B.S. Warner went to UNI, the smallest football school here in Iowa, and proved that theory to be ignorant!

Warner proved you do not have to be the first round pick..shoot not even a last rounder...he was the Tom Brady of his era if that makes sense..only he DID not get drafted at all came into the NFl and is now known as one of the best EVER
