* Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has joined English
Premier League rivals Newcastle United for a transfer fee of 5.8
million pounds ($11.43 million).
City's Web site (www.mcfc.co.uk) said Newcastle raised their
offer after West Ham United had also submitted a 5.5 million bid
for the 24-year-old, who made his England debut in February.
Barton was suspended by City after an alleged assault on
team mate Ousmane Dabo on May 1. He was later arrested by
Greater Manchster Police and bailed until July 11 pending
further enquiries.
